Retailers, being unwilling to purchase partially spoiled, peeled, or damaged vegetables, sell them to a group of small vendors. Due to financial constraints, these small traders cannot afford to rent a proper shop and sell vegetables at higher prices. They displayed the good parts salvaged from partially rotten or pest-infested ones, dividing them into small portions or ‘bhaga’. Despite an increase in the supply of winter vegetables, prices remain relatively high, prompting individuals from lower-income groups to prefer buying from these makeshift shops. While most vendors sell vegetables they purchase from wholesalers at a lower price, some gather discarded vegetables at night, cut off the bad parts, and sell them at a cheaper rate in the morning.

Not that long ago, probably less than a century, our back yards looked much like the magnificent forests that draw zillions of visitors to our region. Tall firs and bushy cedars rose above thickets of flower-and-fruit bearing shrubs; huckleberry and snowberry, salmon berry and thimbleberry, currants and wild cranberry, wild apple and wild cherry. Among the most invasive are English laurel, English holly, Scotch broom, Scotch thistle, European daphne, European hawthorne, European mountain ash, European viburnum, Norway maple. When invasives are removed, we can replace them with a native version; vine maple, Western hawthorne, Western mountain ash, Western viburnum, and many more. This illustrated handbook also includes lore about how native plants have been used by Native people for millennia, making for fascinating reading.

WASHINGTON, Dec 24, 2023 (BSS/AFP) - A Japanese-owned chemical tanker struck Saturday off the coast of India was targeted by a drone "fired from Iran," the Pentagon said, a sign of expanding risks to commercial shipping beyond the Red Sea. The US military "remains in communication with the vessel as it continues toward a destination in India," it added. The drone strike occurred 200 nautical miles (370 kilometers) off the coast of India, it said, adding that no US Navy vessels were in the vicinity. Ambrey, a maritime security firm, said the "chemical/products tanker... was Israel-affiliated" and had been on its way from Saudi Arabia to India. Last month, an Israeli-owned cargo ship was hit in a suspected drone attack by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in the Indian Ocean, according to a US official.
