Police have arrested three people for allegedly installing CCTV cameras in several rooms of Woman's World, a beauty salon in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi. Emdadul Hasan, 53, Taslim Arif Ilyas, 52, and HM Jewel Khandkar, 33, were arrested on Tuesday after a complaint was made by one of the customers, said Parvez Islam, the chief of Dhanmondi Police Station. Police recovered digital video recorders of eight CCTV cameras at the Dhanmondi branch of Woman's World. Sub-Inspector Ekram Ali of Dhanmondi Police Station filed a case over the incident as the alleged victim was in distress, said Parvez.

DHAKA, Dec 27, 2023 (BSS) – Awami League (AL) has committed to forming the ‘National Commission for Minorities’ if it is elected in the next general elections to be held on January 7, 2024. The AL came up with pledge in its election manifesto for 2024 general elections, announced by AL President Sheikh Hasina, at a city hotel today. During the tenure of the AL government, Jatiya Sangsad amended the Vested Property Act, and measures were taken to resolve the issues related to vested property. To protect the interests of minorities, the ‘National Commission for Minorities’ will be formed, and the ‘Special Protection of Minorities Act’ will be enacted, according to the election manifesto. The AL will continue to take necessary steps to ensure the security of life and livelihood of religious minorities, small ethnic groups, and backward communities.

The Election Commission has imposed fines on prominent Awami League candidates AKM Bahauddin Bahar and Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu for breaching the electoral code of conduct. The decision was made after a hearing on Wednesday, where the possibility of cancelling their candidacies for multiple violations was considered. Ukil Uddin Sheikh, a death-row inmate convicted of committing war crimes during the 1971 Liberation War in Bagerhat, has died at a Dhaka hospital at the age of 77. He was behind bars at Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital due to illness seven days ago. He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at the hospital around 1:00 am on Wednesday, said senior jail superintendent Subhash Kumar Ghosh. On Nov 30, seven people, including Ukil, were sentenced to death for crimes against humanity committed during the Liberation War. The court ruled that all seven of the charges against the criminals -- including rape and murder -- were proven true.

The Rapid Action Battalion has arrested two ‘saboteurs’ carrying petrol bombs, improvised explosives, and equipment to produce them from Dhaka’s Kadamtoli. The arrestees were identified as Md Nayon, 22, and Md Alamin, 23. The two made and supplied petrol bombs and improvised bombs according to the directives from the local BNP and Jubo Dal leaders, the law enforcers said. The elite force seized 13 improvised bombs, 15 petrol bombs, gunpowder, glass powder, and other materials needed to make explosives from Nayon and Alamin. Legal procedures against the arrestees are underway, the law enforcers said in their statement.

Late religious affairs minister principal Matiur Rahman had often faced difficulties in winning elections because of disputes in the Awami League's Mymensingh unit. He had once been dropped to make way for the Jatiya Party as part of a deal to share seats. Shanto’s main rival is businessman-cum-politician Aminul Haque Shamim, a vice president of the district Awami League who is running for Mymensingh-4 as an independent.
