Govt to hold dialogues with political parties on Saturday
DHAKA, Oct 15, 2024 (BSS) - The council of advisers of the interim government will hold dialogues with political parties on Saturday on continuation of its new round of political dialogue aiming to advance the state reform works. "On Saturday next, dialogues will be held with some other political parties to discuss how the reform process can be advanced and their (political parties) opinions will be sought to this end," Chief Adviser's Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder told a press briefing at Foreign Service Academy here this evening. Azad said Gano Forum, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Jatiyatabadi Samamona Jote, 12-parties, Jatiya Mukti Council, Labour Party, Jatiya Party (Andalib) and some other political parties will join the dialogues on Saturday. On October 5, 2024, the government initiated a new round of political dialogue with the political parties, while Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and some major political parties attended the dialogues on that day. Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Safiqul Alam was present at the press briefing.

2,064 finally recruited from 43rd BCS
The interim government on Tuesday issued the gazette of 43rd BCS, recommending their appointment in different cadres, almost four years after the recruitment notification. The Public Service Commission, or PSC, later published the final results of this BCS on Dec 26, 2023, and recommended the appointment of 2,805 candidates, including cadre and non-cadre. The recommended candidates expressed frustration at different times as the ministry did not issue the final notice despite the results last December. In the final result in 2023, the PSC had recommended the aspirantsagainst 2,218 vacant posts of various cadres and 642 candidates against 1,342 vacant non-cadre positions. SC lawyers demonstrate seeking resignation of 30 judges
DHAKA, Oct 15, 2024 (BSS) - Supreme Court (SC) lawyers today demonstrated on the court premises, demanding resignation or removal of 30 High Court judges, accusing them of committing corruption and flattering the then government of Sheikh Hasina. More than one hundred lawyers took part in the demonstration and marched in a procession towards the Chief Justice's office. The demonstrating lawyers chanted different slogans, demanding resignation of those judges appointed by the past government. We would declare our next program on that day," Advocate Syed Mamun Mahbub told newsmen. Earlier, the demonstrating lawyers from a rally on September 30 gave ultimatum for resignation or removal of the 'highly corrupt and biased' judges by October 20.

Army chief off to USA, Canada on official visit
DHAKA, Oct 15, 2024 (BSS) - Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman today left here for the United States of America (USA) and Canada on an 11-day official visit, said a release of Inter Services Public Relation Directorate (ISPR) this morning. "During the visit, he will participate in meetings with high-ranking military and civilian officials of the UN Headquarters, the USA and Canada to discuss matters related to the UN peacekeeping mission, increasing capacity of the army, developing bilateral relations and determining the future course of action and discuss various issues of mutual cooperation," it said. The army chief will return home on October 25, the release added.

NBR reviewing traders' proposal to waive edible oil duty
The proposal was made during a meeting on Tuesday between edible oil traders and Commerce Advisor Salehuddin Ahmed at his office, according to the ministry's spokesperson Md Kamal Hossain. The NBR had already zeroed out customs duties for edible oil, and there are no regulatory duties in place. The benefit ended on April 15, leading edible oil traders to announce a price increase of Tk 10 per kg the following day. Over the past few months, the global prices of soybean and palm oil have risen steadily, with crude soybean oil increasing by 14.8 per cent and RBD palm oil by 18.68 per cent. The Bangladesh Vegetable Oil Refiners and Vanaspati Manufacturers Association said waiving such duties would allow existing edible oil prices to remain stable without further increases.

Ex-ministers Abdur Razzaque, Faruk Khan remanded for 2 days each
Abdur Razzaque and Faruk Khan, two former ministers in the Awami League administration, have been remanded for two days each for interrogation in police custody in separate cases. The investigator in the case, Inspector Jahangir Arif from the Detective Branch, then petitioned for him to be remanded for seven days.
