Marc Spiegler and Patrick Foret of Swiss foundation Art Basel have announced a partnership with the city of Buenos Aires to host a number of cultural and art events to promote BA’s rich and diverse history. This is the first initiative of its kind in the region, with Art Basel hoping to launch similar working relationships with different cities in the future. Since announcing the launch of Art Basel Cities in March 2016, we have engaged in many conversations with great cities around the world. We are hugely excited to present Buenos Aires as our first City Partner and the only one in South America. The program will go beyond the establishment of fairs and galleries, using Art Basel’s extensive network to promote Buenos Aires.

Federal Judge Sandra Arroyo Salgado, the mother of late prosecutor Alberto Nisman’s daughters, joined the petition that was published in numerous news outlets calling for the ouster of Federal Judge Daniel Rafecas. But she’s also a judge and she should know better than anyone that if we followed the law to a tee, the petition would actually be going against republican ideals. After all, the country has an actual organization devoted with the very task of impeaching judges: the Council of Magistrates. And that’s what the judge considered when he decided to dismiss Nisman’s accusation. A request that Rafecas had already dismissed on August 5.

A fellow repressor, Francisco Gómez, was also sentenced to jail for being an accessory to their kidnapping and illegally appropriating their child. Their daughter, Mariana Eva, was released during the initial abduction and stayed with a family member. The two were taken to the Regional Intelligence Centre of Buenos Aires (RIBA), which was under the Air Force’s jurisdiction and run by Trillo. Mariana found Guillermo in 2000, when the two took DNA tests that confirmed they were related. Graffigna described his actions as “purely professional.”The plaintiffs in the case were Mariana, Guillermo Gómez’s lawyer Pablo Llonto and the Human Rights Secretariat at both the federal and provincial level.

Argentina just doesn’t seem as attractive to foreign visitors as it once did. That trend continued in July, when the number of tourists coming into the country fell by 2.6 percent to 188,400, according to statistics released yesterday by the Indec. In contrast, the number of Argentine tourists traveling internationally soared 22 percent to 1.98 million. Now, the increased relative value of the peso is making tourism in Argentina an expensive proposition, particularly when compared to other destinations in Latin America. On the plus side, Brazil still seems to love us more than any other country, despite its well-known economic woes, accounting for 35.5 percent of all tourists who arrived in Argentina in July.

Nicolás Lang, a 23-year-old Argentine tourist who was vacationing in Colombia, died on Tuesday due to severe head injuries he suffered when he fell from the top of a hill. He was just trying to take a selfie, according to Colombian authorities. Nicolas was trying to take a selfie when he suddenly slipped, lost his balance and fell, hitting his head against a rock. Lang’s death sparked controversy in local media, considering that Minca is trying to bill itself as a rising tourism destination but there was no ambulance available to transfer the Argentine to a hospital. You can tell by the photos on his Facebook account that Lang was a big fan of the outdoors.

Against Uruguay, the team were functional, opportunistic and, in the second half, determined when down to 10 men. So, what have we learned from these two first games? The first lesson is that Lionel Messi is a key player for Argentina. Bauza can at least be happy that he’s still an Argentina player after all. But Bauza’s already gone one better than Alejandro Sabella in one respect: Sabella lost to Venezuela early in his Argentina tenure.

At least 10 barrels of pseudoephedrine, which is a key ingredient to manufacture a few types of legal drugs as well as methamphetamine, were found at Ezeiza international airport yesterday. Each weighed around 25 kilograms, meaning that there was at least 250 kilograms of the stuff. And, not for the first time in Argentina mind you, it’s all causing quite a stir in political circles. The barrels were brought in from France by a Paraguayan company and were supposedly “in transit” to Paraguay but the “importers never claimed them,” according to La Nación. In fact, he had already been providing information to the judicial system before being removed from his post.

We all know the administration of City of Buenos Aires Mayor Horacio Rodríguez Larreta doesn’t like Uber. It has not wasted a single opportunity to side with taxi drivers and their mafia-like union whenever possible. But now, the whole ridiculous fight has reached a new level of ridiculousness as its determination to take down the global application no matter what, now includes the ridiculous suggestion that drivers using the app should be sent to prison. All the regulation may have made it more difficult for Uber to operate since it first launched services in April. The chamber said the app would automatically bankrupt small taxi companies and nationalize taxi services.

But, after more than eight months since the new government took office, the investment boom has yet to arrive. And they haven’t been able to clear the doubts that still exist regarding the possibilities to solve the inherited macroeconomic imbalances. The relative scarcity of investments during the first half of the year led the government to recalculate its strategy for the economy to grow again in the short term. What is the recipe for sustainable growth in the investment flows, in particular, and in the GDP, in general? From a social point of view, the common factor is the presence of social majorities with a shared vision around basic concepts (what kind of country/society do we want be?)

Given that this incident has once again raised the issue of self-defense, we must outline its requirements and limits. Indeed, the penal code refers to the “defense of the person or his rights,” which leaves no doubt this includes his personal property. The condition required by law for that defense to be lawful is that, when suffering an attack, one employ rational means to prevent or repel it. There is no such thing as property that is considered worthy of being defended at the cost of the robber’s life, and property that is not. The law, as we saw, is clear in that it allows the defense of any property leaving aside, obviously, trivial objects or those of very little value.

5 of San Martín, presided over by Judge Alfredo Ruíz Paz, also sentenced the Air Force chief’s subordinate during the last military dictatorship (1976-1983). Patricia Roisinblit was pregnant when she, Perez Rojo, and their 15-month-old daughter were taken to a clandestine intelligence detention centre in the Greater Buenos Aires district of Morón. It was there that Patricia gave birth to a baby boy, Guillermo Pérez Roisinblit, who was snatched by Gómez. Guillermo was the first missing grandchild found to have been illegally adopted by a member of the Air Force, part of a systemic campaign of stolen identities later uncovered. During the trial, Amalia María Larralde, Mónica Lewin and Nilda Actis de Goretta gave key testimonies of how they were held in captivity at the ESMA with Patricia Roisinblit.
