Vietnam seeks stronger green finance ties with Luxembourg

He also called for assistance in the formation of a carbon market as Vietnam is working to build a plan on the establishment of this market.Minister Backes noted Vietnam is a developing economy that needs considerable investment to conduct green transition. It hopes for the latter’s help with institutional building; technology for digital transformation; transparent, safe, healthy and sustainable operation of the stock market; and development of high-quality human resources, the official went on.At LuxSE, Minister Phoc chaired a roundtable workshop on connecting the two countries in building a green capital market. The event attracted representatives of Luxembourg authorities along with investment funds, businesses, and major investors from Luxembourg and some neighbouring countries.In addition, Phoc had a working session with Vice President of the European Investment Bank (EIB) Kris Peeters to discuss the EIB loan of 500 million EUR (548.5 million USD) for Vietnam to carry out energy transition. He also called for the bank’s promotion of financial support for environmental and urban transport projects in the country.During the trip, the MoF delegation also visited the Luxembourg House of Financial Technology (LHoFT)./.

Thailand: Eight parties united in upcoming PM vote

With the vote for House Speaker and deputies completed, the parliament of Thailand is heading to the next crucial meeting to vote for Prime Minister. Eight parties holding the majority seats in the lower house said they were united in their decision to vote for Move Forward party leader Pita Limjaroenrat.The journey for the next Prime Minister and the new government coalition is approaching its critical point, with the parliament now expected to hold a vote for Prime Minister soon, following the vote for House Speaker.According to Wissanu Krea-ngam, Deputy Prime Minister of the caretaker government, the parliament will now submit the names of persons nominated as House Speaker and two corresponding deputies to His Majesty the King for official proclamation.Following the proclamation, the House Speaker, whose official title is President of the National Assembly, will then confer with the President of the Senate, to schedule an appropriate date for a National Assembly session, in which members of both the upper and lower houses will vote for Prime Minister. The caretaker government will remain in power until the day on which the new Prime Minister and Cabinet swear in.The eight parties led by Move Forward party (MFP), who secured the highest number of seats in the House of Representatives, have expressed their unity in the forming of the MFP-led government coalition, with MFP leader Pita Limjaroenrat serving as Prime Minister. Pheu Thai party leader Dr. Chonlanan Srikaew said the eight parties will mutually nominate Pita for the Prime Ministerial vote, and will try to secure the most votes possible to reach the minimum 376 votes required.Dr Chonlanan stressed that his party does not have a backup plan in place, in case Pita faces major political obstacles. He said the only plan right now is to secure enough votes./.

Vietnam updates EC on efforts to combat IUU fishing

They also considered the amendment of Article 70 on control under the Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA), and the supplement of regulations on control of aquatic products originating from fishing activities imported into Vietnam by container ships.The Vietnamese side informed the EC side on the pace of deploying the management of offshore fishing vessels and vessels' movement through ports, and supervision of fishing output at ports; the implementation of the Capture Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Protection Plan; the fisheries management plan; the traceability work to ensure that shipments exported to the European market are legal; and the enforcement of law with a focus on handling vessels violating foreign waters and building a database on the handling of such violations from central to local levels.According to Hung, the two sides have basically reached agreement on discussed issues and the DG-MARE also agreed with the work that Vietnam has carried out.The EC suggested that Vietnam take stronger measures to combat illegal fishing and put an end to fishing boats violating foreign waters, as well as to handle fishing vessels that lose VMS connection, he said.The MARD and DG-MARE are scheduled to hold an online dialogue in September to continue to exchange and update the implementation of r ec ommendations before the EC sends its inspection team to Vietnam to examine the country’s efforts on IUU fishing prevention and control in October.
