This means that when he is inaugurated on Jan. 20, 2025, Donald Trump immediately becomes a lame duck president. Just as important, recognizing the limitations on a Trump presidency is a first step toward holding Trump in check. Of course, it’s hard to imagine a wholesale intraparty rebellion, because Republicans have caved in to Trump again and again. But GOP politicians who hope for long and happy political futures are starting to think beyond this moment to the time when Trump is gone. But GOP politicians now face a question they never had to ask about Trump: How much are they willing to risk on behalf of a lame-duck president?

In reality, only one person died that day, and that was Babbitt, who was shot while trying to climb through a window. Babbitt, 35, was an Air Force veteran and Trump supporter who participated in the riot three years ago. Babbitt and others began to force their way through, and Babbitt started to climb through a broken window. Nevertheless, Byrd boasted, “I know that day I saved countless lives.” He ignored that Babbitt was the one person killed during the riot. The Babbitt family has continued to fight to force the facts into the open and has filed a civil case.

The U.S. Senate has rejected a legislative effort that would have blocked some arms sales to Israel. Pro-Israel groups, like the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and Democratic Majority for Israel (DMFI), have lobbied against the resolutions. “Let’s stand together to strengthen international security and support our ally, Israel in this difficult time,” it continues. A Senate aide also told the website that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is pressing his colleagues to vote against the measures. The Senate vote comes just a week after the Biden administration abandoned its ultimatum to cut off some weapons to Israel if the country continued to block humanitarian aid from entering Gaza.

David X. Sullivan, Thomas J. Finn and Gregory A. Hall from McCarter & English have entered appearances for Sunrun Installation Services in a pending civil rights lawsuit. The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. Berke on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins, who was arrested and charged with employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. The complaint alleges that had Sunrun informed the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that the plaintiff's employment had ended in 2017 and that he no longer held Sunrun's home improvement contractor license, he would not have been hit with charges, which were dismissed in May 2024. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer, is 3:24-cv-01423, Steins v. Sunrun, Inc. et al.

On Wednesday, the U.S. was the sole country to vote against a United Nations Security Council cease-fire resolution in the Gaza Strip. The resolution was calling for an immediate and unconditional cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. The U.S. stated that it vetoed the resolution as it was not contingent on the release of hostages currently held in Gaza. While the proposal called for hostage release, the wording suggested that the cease-fire would come before hostage release. This is the fourth time the U.S. has blocked the Council’s attempt to demand a cease-fire over the past year.

The Biden administration has agreed to supply Ukraine with U.S. anti-personnel mines. These mines will aid Ukraine against Russian attacks. In response, Russia decided to lower its threshold for the use of nuclear weapons.
