Shame, misery as floods leave many without toilets
The worst flooding in Pakistan’s history has covered an area the size of the United Kingdom and affected 33 million people — one in seven people. A lack of functioning toilets at these camps is one of the biggest issues — posing a health hazard for all, but misery in particular for women and girls. Some women have stopped venturing into the floodwater to relieve themselves after many developed rashes. When the sun sets and darkness descends on the camp, the women search for a secluded spot away from flickering campfires. “I don’t know what we can even do if someone does decide to come and take advantage of us,” said Shameen.

UN begins massive relief operation for flood victims
KARACHI: The UN refugee agency mounted a massive airlift relief operation for over 33 million victims of the disastrous floods. Additional six flights are also scheduled from Dubai for Wednesday and Thursday, the UN agency said in a statement. The authorities need much more support with shelter, relief supplies, and technical expertise. “This [more rain] will increase challenges for flood survivors, and likely worsen conditions for nearly half a million displaced people, forcing more to abandon their homes,” said UNHCR. PM Shehbaz stresses govts’ joint plan for flood-hit areas rehab
ISLAMABAD -Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday emphasized for devising a comprehensive strategy jointly chalked out by the federal and provincial governments for the restoration of infrastructure in the flood-affected areas. The prime minister mentioned that the flood-hit areas faced numerous issues related to water drainage, infrastructure breakdown, and connectivity. PM Sharif said the government had increased the financial assistance for flood-affected people under Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) from Rs 28 billion to Rs 70 billion. The prime minister said work was in full swing in the flood-affected areas for relief and rehabilitation. The prime minister termed unity as the greatest strength of the Pakistani nation to deal with the challenges effectively.

However, rain can be disastrous in those sectors which do not have powerful constructions to insulate themselves. Sindh Monsoon-22 has caused damage to many areas due to unsuitable drainage systems. Moreover, the Government of Sindh also enables the people in the form of allotting a good amount to the DC of cities, Is that amount used to confound the cracks in cities? As we know, people make houses, houses don’t make people; it’s time to alleviate each other to relieve the hindrance, let us proceed with a small step to help the poverty sector. The government should demonstrate the use of higher amounts at the right places for deserving areas and also concentrate to assemble a robust drainage system to assure the future of Sindh from such constraints.

Thunberg highlights climate crisis citing Pakistan floods

Thunberg, whose Friday protests outside Sweden's parliament years ago turned into a global youth movement demanding action on climate change, said the issue had been "pretty much non-existent," during the campaign. Suri’s acceptance of PTI MNAs' resignations unconstitutional: IHC
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) declared unconstitutional former deputy speaker of the National Assembly Qasim Suri's acceptance of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MNAs resignations. The IHC judge also told the PTI lawyer to take the party’s request to the NA Speaker. “The deputy speaker could not have accepted the resignations collectively, contrary to the Constitution and the court's decision. The PTI lawyer still pleaded that the then deputy speaker had accepted the party members' resignations on which the court remarked that Suri’s notification was unconstitutional. As the IHC rejected former acting speaker Suri’s notification regarding the PTI MNAs' resignations unconstitutional today, the party’s lawyer argued that “if elections are to be held, they should be conducted in all 123 constituencies”.

Two new breaches expected at Manchar Lake as overflow continues
The embankment at Manchar Lake was breached at two more points to lower the reservoir’s water level which remained dangerously high, posing a threat to adjoining areas. The new cuts were made near the RD-50 and RD-52 points in Pakistan’s largest freshwater lake. Sindh Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro said the water level in the lake had not receded despite a controlled breach on Sunday. Meanwhile, water from the lake inundated hundreds of villages along the Indus Highway near the Sehwan toll plaza and Bobak-Sehwan link road. The water is one foot below the dam of the MNV drain near Kari Mori.

The nation is celebrating its 58th Defence and Martyrs Day today (Tuesday), to revive the courageous war which incurred a shameful defeat to a six times bigger enemy India, in solidarity with the flood victims of the country. The Defence and Martyrs Day is celebrated every year on September 6th to revitalise the national spirit, remember and eulogise the sacrifices of the martyrs, who spilled their blood for the security of the sacred motherland and marked an exemplary history of patriotism. Special prayers were offered after Fajr prayers in mosques for progress and prosperity of the country. However, the central Defence and Martyrs Day ceremony to be held at the General Headquarters (GHQ) was postponed by the Pakistan Army due to the prevailing floods that wreaked havoc in the flood affected areas of Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Pakistan Armed Forces will continue serving their brothers and sisters struck by unprecedented floods, told the ISPR DG earlier.

We are 10 days away from the unofficial start of another Edmonton Oilers season. With training camp just over two weeks away, here are 10 questions I have. RNH took the fifth most faceoffs (437), behind Derek Ryan (512), Ryan McLeod (525), Connor McDavid (1,046) and Leon Draisaitl (1,661). I think we see him split time between LW/C, because there will be games where McDavid and Draisaitl play together. The risk with a 20-man roster is you will play one game with either 11 forwards or five D-men.
