Indian and Chinese troops have begun disengaging from the Gogra-Hotsprings border area in the western Himalayas, the Indian government said in a statement on Thursday, two years after clashes at the frontier strained diplomatic ties. The statement comes ahead of a meeting in Uzbekistan next week which Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are expected to attend. India said disengagement was taking place in a coordinated and planned way and is meant to keep border peace. There have been 16 rounds of meetings between senior military commanders from both countries since June 2020 when Indian and Chinese troops clashed in the Galwan area of Ladakh. At least 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers were killed in hand-to-hand fighting, leading to a sharp escalation in tensions between the Asian giants.

Brad Holland was six years old when his father, Ken, became a scout for the Detroit Red Wings. I caught up with Brad to discuss his career path, working with his father, analytics and his new promotion to assistant general manager. Brad was offered an assistant GM job with another NHL team, and the Oilers opted to match that rather than let him leave. So when I got this pro scouting job, I thought you know what, I’m going to be the best pro-scout that I can be. I think Edmonton was close to the first adopter of sports analytics in hockey.

— State Department says sale won’t alter ‘basic military balance’ in regionWASHINGTON: The US State Department has approved the potential sale of F-16 aircraft sustainment and related equipment to Pakistan in a deal valued at up to $450 million, the Pentagon said. In a notification to Congress, the State Department “made a determination approving the possible sale”, arguing it will sustain Islamabad’s capability to meet current and future counterterrorism threats by maintaining its F-16 fleet. But the sale won’t provide Pakistan with any new capabilities, weapons, or munitions. Pakistan, a State Department spokesperson separately said, is an important counterterrorism partner, and as part of longstanding policy, Washington provides life cycle maintenance and sustainment packages for US-origin platforms. This is Washington’s first major security assistance to Pakistan since 2018 when then-president Donald Trump announced to halt defense and security assistance to Pakistan.

After coming off a 23-24 win against the LSU Tigers and a special teams performance that involved two blocked kicks and two recovered fumbles, special teams coordinator and defensive ends coach John Papuchis spoke with the media regarding this past Sunday and today’s practice. Two players were able to get their hands in the air to block kicks, DE Jared Verse (field goal) and DB Shyheim Brown (PAT to win the game), Papuchis spoke on what that meant for the team. “The very first field goal that we didn’t block, we got good penetration on it. “Momentum only affects the people that allow it and it only is as long as the next play. So you can change the momentum with one play, and then, two is let your effort always be your defining factor.

With a fresh gain of Rs0.55 on Monday, rupee has recovered 8.54% or Rs14.39 during the past seven months to date. PHOTO: FILEThe cost of commercial bank financing has hit a record high at 16% on fresh lending to the government at a time when the country is facing high inflation and busy fighting the widespread flood devastation. The high cost of borrowing forced the government to raise Rs817 billion through the sale of its debt securities – three to 12-month treasury bills – to commercial banks, which was lower than the pre-auction target of Rs1 trillion. The T-bills’ auction came as the government was to repay the maturing papers worth Rs1.028 trillion to the commercial banks. The cut-off yield (cost of government borrowing) could have gone further high had the government decided to raise a higher amount.

Ethiopian Ambassador Jemal Beker has expressed his country’s keen interest in promoting trade ties with Pakistan and invited Pakistani businessmen to explore the untapped Ethiopian markets to improve trade and exports. “Ethiopia is keen to promote trade ties with Pakistan as increasing commerce will be very beneficial to the people and economies of both countries,” he said. As Ethiopia was importing many products from China and India, it was an opportunity for Pakistan to focus on the Ethiopian market and improve its exports, he pointed out. “Ethiopia is importing 80% of pharmaceutical products and Pakistani pharma sector investors should form joint ventures in Ethiopia to meet its market requirement and export the surplus to other African countries,” he suggested. The second was declared last week in Philadelphia: the fight for the soul of the nation against Trump “MAGA Republicans.”This column disagrees that the great struggle is between democracy and autocracy. As the president correctly pointed out, the political basis for America’s democracy is the Constitution. Indeed, the Founding Fathers eschewed “factions” as surrogates for political parties. Yet, along the way, both political parties have proven incapable of properly governing. But the latter, Biden claimed, were destroying the soul of the nation.

On Wednesday night, the High A Vancouver Canadians punched their ticket into the Northwest playoffs. After a first half that saw the team finish 30-33, fourth in the NW League, the Toronto Blue Jays affiliate have had a fantastic second half, where their record sits at 37-25. At the start of that series on August 30th, the Canadians only had one and a half games on Spokane in the overall standings. The Canadians can win the second half outright, as they just need to win the next four games Eugene Emeralds, who also happen to be first in the second half standings. For a large part of the season, if you had asked me which team I’d enjoy watching the most, I’d say the Vancouver Canadians (and that includes the Blue Jays).
