LEICESTER: Dozens were arrested in East Leicester after tensions between Hindu and Muslim communities hit a boiling point, police confirmed on Monday. “We are aware of a video circulating showing a man pulling down a flag outside a religious building on Melton Road, Leicester. Meanwhile, the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) has issued a statement condemning the “targeting of Muslim communities in Leicester by far-right Hindutva groups. “We do not believe these people represent the views of wider Hindu communities, with whom Muslims and Sikhs, among others, enjoy good relations in the UK, of which Leicester, historically, is a prime example. “These tensions which have risen are now I think part of broader social change that is occurring within the city,” said Singh.

Former prime minister and PTI Chairman Imran Khan has said that it has become inevitable to govern the country in an “unprecedented way” to deal with the prevailing economic crisis. Imran said taking “big and bold decisions” are need of the hour to stabilise the country’s economy particularly to stop the bleeding of public sector enterprises. Since being ousted from power in April this year, Imran has time and again called upon the PML-N-led government to dissolve assemblies and hold transparent polls to save the country from “economic collapse”. Moreover, Imran said the country is facing an external financing gap of $30 billion which he said is also the reason that value of the rupee was constantly depreciating against the dollar. Invoking the mysterious figures of 'Mr X' and 'Mr Y', the PTI chief urged the party activists to smash "the idol of fear" and combat their threats with similar threats.

Share:The arrest of two Kashmiri clerics in Indian Occupied Kashmir (IOK) under the Public Safety Act (PSA) reflects the fear the Indian state has against any opposition in the occupied region. Abdul Rashid Dawoodi and Mushtaq Ahmed Veeri are both Muslim leaders with large social media followings, and it is clear that for the Indian state, this is unacceptable. With political leaders targeted over decades, the addition of clerics to the list of wrongful arrests is not likely to be taken down by the Kashmiri people. The only way to stop this cycle is to allow the Kashmiri people to exercise their freedom to choose their future. This is what the Pakistani people and government must stand for in support of our people in the occupied region.

Share:India, the world’s largest democracy, embraced secularism in 1976 through the enactment of the 42nd amendment to the constitution. Perceptively, it neither had the will nor the urge for secularism and seemed more of an attempt to portray a brighter picture of India to the world. The ruthless assassination of Gandhi was a warning for the times to come and the beginning of the long journey towards fascism and the creation of the Hindu Rashtra. Ironically the policies being enacted by BJP, seem right out of Hitler’s Nazi manifesto—the road to fascism. The question asked by Arundhati Roy requires an answer from the Indians; “Does a country fall into fascism the way a person falls in love?

Unfortunately, in the land of the pure, ‘crimes of the state’ are not punished. It’s the colonial mindset that dominates the state apparatus after 75 years of independence. “You are now servants of the state” were his words. Then in 2017, the Right to Information Act was enacted. In the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the crimes of the state must be checked and punished for the nation to grow.

Being unbanked does not mean women do not have the potential to contribute to the market; we have seen women in South Asia save and spend in their own ways. Research shows that when a woman gets a bank account, she builds savings, spends more on children’s education and invests in business opportunities. Pakistan has come a long way in great financial inclusion, not just for women. There are more micro-finance and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) than ever, with many NBFCs specially geared towards providing financial services to women, and particularly disadvantaged women. There is a $500-million market opportunity in Pakistan that can be tapped by getting women to start banking.

On the latest episode of The DFO Rundown, Frank Seravalli said that Pierre Engvall could be out due to a nagging injury. I do think they have been dealing with a little bit of an injury up-front. I think Pierre Engvall has been a little bit banged up this summer and may miss a little bit of time. His salary for the year is $2.25 million and putting him on IR would bring the Leafs’ cap hit up to $757K. How much time Engvall will miss remains to be seen, but his absence will leave a gaping hole in the bottom-six.
