The Executive Chairman of the Nigerian Revenue Service (NRS), Zacch Adedeji, has described technology as a crucial factor in the implementation of the new tax laws in the country. “Nigeria has recently enacted a new set of tax laws, representing the most significant restructuring of our nation’s fiscal legislation in 50 years. “Historically, tax administration relied heavily on human discretion over who is registered, who is assessed, who is audited, and who is penalized. “One of the most important prospects of a technology-driven tax administration is the ability to expand the tax base without increasing tax rates. He also commended the tax boss for leading the change in tax administration in the country.

Zimbabwe’s cabinet has approved draft legislation that would allow President Emmerson Mnangagwa, 83, to extend his stay in office until at least 2030. Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi said public consultations would take place before the bill is presented to parliament for debate. Constitutional experts argue that a referendum would be required to change presidential term limits and note that such amendments cannot apply to a sitting president. He won elections in 2018 and secured a second term in 2023, though the results of the latest vote were disputed. In 2013, Zimbabweans approved a new constitution through a referendum that introduced presidential term limits.

Researchers at Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland have developed a groundbreaking AI-powered headset that can predict epileptic seizures before they occur. Professor Hadi Larijani, who led the research team at Glasgow Caledonian University, explained that the unique headset analyses brainwaves and heart rate to detect seizures, giving those with epilepsy “more confidence” in managing the condition. Currently, no readily available device can provide advanced warnings of seizures for people with epilepsy. Professor Larijani said the headset is “very unique”, and the team hopes to one day release it as a wearable device similar to a cap. Prof Larijani added: “For families affected by epilepsy, even a brief warning means they can prevent injuries and reduce fear.

A new study published in The Lancet Global Health has revealed that Africa faces the widest gap in cataract care globally, with three out of every four people who require surgery still untreated. The analysis, which reviewed data from 68 countries between 2023 and 2024, found significant disparities in access to cataract surgery. Cataract, a condition that clouds the eye’s lens and leads to blurred vision and possible blindness, affects more than 94 million people worldwide. WHO emphasised that eliminating avoidable cataract blindness is both achievable and essential. With sustained commitment, cataract surgery can move from being out of reach for millions to a universally accessible intervention, helping to end avoidable blindness worldwide,” the statement said.
