While Nigeria’s average plastic waste generation figures are still hard to quantify, estimates indicate that the country ranks ninth in the world with the most plastic waste – a whopping 2.5 million metric tonnes yearly. In 2021, a report from the Lagos State Waste Management Authority, indicated that the recycling economy of the state generated as much as N18 billion. From all indications, this is a flourishing industry that extends beyond just waste collection; it encompasses a vibrant ecosystem that involves waste collection, sorting, processing into bales or flakes, and recycling of these materials into resins or other reusable materials. This transformative process gives rise to a circular economy, where plastic waste becomes a valuable resource, promoting sustainability and economic growth. In all of this, some observers have noted that a critical element in tackling the challenges posed by plastic waste can be achieved through collaboration.

Much of the discussion before the semi-final has been around the lack of a reserve day and there is rain forecast for Thursday. The first semi-final between South Africa and Afghanistan has a rain reserve day but England's meeting with India does not. Mott said in an "ideal world", there would be a reserve day and it is something the International Cricket Council "need to look at long term". The match is a repeat of the semi-final of the last T20 World Cup in Australia, where a superb England thrashed India by 10 wickets in Adelaide en route to winning the title. Mott said India, who timidly posted 168-6 that night before England chased the target in 16 overs, are a more aggressive side this year.

The South Korea Gumi City Council has explained how their first administrative officer robot committed suicide. On Wednesday, the council said that the robot was found defunct after an apparent fall down a staircase, prompting local media to speculate about the country’s first case of robot suicide. The incident occurred last week when the robot was discovered unresponsive at the bottom of a two-meter (six-and-a-half foot) staircase. Made by Bear Robotics, a Californian startup known for their robot waiters, this particular robot worked from 9 am to 6 pm and had its own civil service officer card. Currently, the Gumi City Council has no plans to adopt a second robot officer, as confirmed to AFP.

While translating complex economic behaviours into mathematical models offers the promise of precision and objectivity, it can overlook the intricate realities of daily life. While comprehensive data analysis is undeniably crucial for informing sound economic policies, a solely “mathematical” approach can have limitations. The hardship this policy introduced was profound and widespread, plunging more people into poverty and distress—a reality that the economic models failed to predict or quantify. The quantitative data used to justify the subsidy removal did not capture the daily economic realities of the average Nigerian. The lesson from Nigeria’s subsidy removal highlights the need for a more holistic approach in economic policy-making.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has an answer to the hunger cum poverty in the land. President Tinubu went further to lecture Nigerians on how to cope in a situation like this. Our culture teaches that once hunger is eliminated from poverty, the rest is easy (tí ebi bá kúrò nínú ìsé, ìsé bùse). It is morally wrong for President Tinubu to ask Nigerians to make sacrifices while he himself is not doing so. President Tinubu has six planes and six helicopters to play with in the PAF.
