A badly wounded Joe Biden looked to get his re-election campaign back on track Friday after a debate performance that unnerved supporters and left allies of Donald Trump unable to conceal their glee. “There are no two ways about it—that was not a good debate for Joe Biden,” Democratic former White House communications chief Kate Bedingfield told host network CNN as the curtain came down on the match-up. David Axelrod, a senior advisor in Barack Obama’s administration, said Biden’s performance had “confirmed people’s fears” about an 81-year-old being too old for the Oval Office. Even a German official coordinating cooperation with the United States told a German newspaper that Democrats should consider replacing Biden as their candidate. Ralph Reed, chairman of the conservative Faith and Freedom Coalition, compared the debate to a prize fight “that should have been stopped in the early rounds.”AFP

Bender said that the decision sets a “dangerous precedent” by allowing polluting industries to get emergency hearings in the supreme court. “We’re pleased that the supreme court recognized the immediate harm to industry and consumers posed by this reckless rule,” said Rich Nolan, president of the National Mining Association. A long-debated citizenship law took effect in Germany on Thursday, easing the pathway to a German passport, including making it easier to hold dual citizenship. The naturalisation reform put forward by Germany’s three-party centre-left coalition government allowed people to become German while retaining their original citizenship. An important aspect of the new rule is that people who obtained their German citizenship would not have to give up the citizenship of their native country. Likewise, Germans who wish to become citizens of another country would no longer need special authorisation from the German authorities. Previously, without authorisation, they would have lost their German citizenship if they acquired another one.

The US supreme court has struck down a lower court ruling in the case of Murthy v Missouri, in a decision that did not find the government’s communications with social media platforms about Covid-19 misinformation violated the first amendment. The court’s decision permits the government to call on tech companies to remove falsehoods, a key concern as misinformation spreads around this year’s presidential election. An initial lower court ruling from a Republican-favorite judge in Louisiana accused federal agencies of taking on the role of “an Orwellian ‘Ministry of Truth’”. The supreme court, in a decision written by Barrett, ruled that “the fifth circuit was wrong” in its conclusions. The court found that the plaintiffs failed to demonstrate that they faced substantial risk of harm from the government.

Lately, that has proven to be most valid with routine hacking and data breaches, leading to unauthorised sales of personal data, identity theft, and misuse of individuals’ National Identification Numbers, among others. While Nigeria’s average plastic waste generation figures are still hard to quantify, estimates indicate that the country ranks ninth in the world with the most plastic waste – a whopping 2.5 million metric tonnes yearly. In 2021, a report from the Lagos State Waste Management Authority, indicated that the recycling economy of the state generated as much as N18 billion. From all indications, this is a flourishing industry that extends beyond just waste collection; it encompasses a vibrant ecosystem that involves waste collection, sorting, processing into bales or flakes, and recycling of these materials into resins or other reusable materials. This transformative process gives rise to a circular economy, where plastic waste becomes a valuable resource, promoting sustainability and economic growth. In all of this, some observers have noted that a critical element in tackling the challenges posed by plastic waste can be achieved through collaboration.
