Kano govt vows to eradicate malnutrition
The Kano state government has declared its determination to eradicate all kinds of malnutrition among pregnant women, adolescent girls, lactating mothers, and children under the age of five. “The Kano state government will do everything possible to support and enhance nutritional outcomes in the communities, through not only academic concepts but practical tools that have the power to transform the lives of the good people of the state,” the statement read. The training aimed to refresh and provide knowledge of Maternal, Infant, and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN) to health workers from various cadres, including academia, medical associations, and representatives from Kano State Polytechnics. Dr Umar Yahuza Umar, Coordinator of ANRIN Kano, elaborated on the importance of linking policy plans and the actualization of the annual nutrition budget in achieving the organised set objectives. He also highlighted the benefits of early initiation, complementary feeding, hygiene practices, and the consequences of malnutrition among the targeted groups.

Russia, Ukraine free 190 soldiers in latest prisoner exchange
Russia and Ukraine have released a total of 190 captured soldiers in the latest prisoner exchange between the two countries, officials in Moscow and Kyiv announced on Wednesday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russia’s defence ministry on Wednesday said that 95 of their soldiers had been freed. “As a result of a negotiation process, 95 Russian servicemen… have been returned,” Russia’s defence ministry said on Telegram. The ministry shared video images of the freed Russian soldiers smiling and chanting “Glory to Russia” as they were transported by bus to an undisclosed location. In June, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that 1,348 Russian soldiers were being held in Ukrainian captivity and that Russia had detained 6,465 Ukrainian POWs.

Police arrest crypto billionaire, Blord, over fraud, terrorism links
Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have arrested Linus Williams, a crypto billionaire popularly known as BLord, in Abuja on Tuesday. He faces allegations of cryptocurrency fraud, terrorism funding, and aiding internet fraud, among other charges related to his companies. In an interview, Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi confirmed the arrest, stating it was based on complaints against BLord’s businesses. “The FCID (NPF-NCCC) is currently investigating complaints lodged against Blord Group, Blord Real Estate Ltd, Blord Jetpaye Limited, and Billpoint Technology.”The alleged offences include “cryptocurrency fraud, aiding internet fraud, computer-related fraud, terrorism funding, and non-compliance with regulatory frameworks.”Adejobi emphasised the importance of ensuring cyberspace safety and security, stating, “We will do due diligence in our investigation. Education in Nigeria: A bleak future for Africa’s giant?
This results in a teacher-to-student ratio of well over 50:1, thereby diminishing the effectiveness of the educational system in Nigeria. Salaries in the educational sector do not motivate people to join the sector, having very little prospects for a financially stable future. According to data from Statista, there are about 116,925 elementary schools in Nigeria, out of which 52% are public schools. The Bola Tinubu-led government pledged to enhance the education sector through increased spending but the meager 6% allocation of the budget to education does not reflect that. Nigeria should take inspiration from countries where impactful public education has a long history and tradition, for example Czech Republic.

What I saw and what I felt made me realise that for the Kenyans, social protest was somewhat a culture. So, now that their young ones, the scions of Aluta Kenyans, are on the streets, I expect no less. What we see in Kenya today should not be taken as “one of those youthful protests.” Those guys mean business. Kenya is burdened by alarming public debt; so is Nigeria. In fact, most indices considered, Kenya is a kindergarten case in comparison to Nigeria.

Bank recapitalisation may not lead to higher GDP – Report
The Proshare Bank Strength Index evaluates banks using a pool of financial metrics based on audited financial statements for the Financial Year 2023. In the report, it named Access Corp, Zenith Bank, FBNH, ETI, UBA, and GTCO as Tier-1 banks in 2024, reinforcing the Afrinvest-inspired concept of FUGAZE. In early June, the Central Bank of Nigeria revealed that banks had started to submit their recapitalisation plans. However, the Proshare report read in part, “Policymakers have associated big banks with larger economies and faster-growing gross domestic products, but the assumption is unproven. However, between 2000 and 2005, bank equity sizes grew over ten times or by 1,150% from N2bn to N25bn.
