The governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Nasarawa State, Joseph Ewuga, has shelved his ambition and declared support for the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, David Ombugadu, ahead of Saturday’s governorship poll. Speaking in the Akwanga Local Government Area on Wednesday, Ewuga said he stepped down to boost the chances of the PDP candidate. While appealing to his supporters to vote for the PDP candidate, Ewuga expressed confidence in the leadership qualities of Ombugadu to take Nasarawa State to greater heights. He said, “I have decided to step down from the governorship race to fully support my brother from the Peoples Democratic Party, David Ombugadu. “Any attempt to rig the elections and usurp the will of the masses will be resisted by the people,” Maku added.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has postponed the governorship and state assembly elections scheduled to hold on March 11 by one week. This was made known in a statement signed by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, INEC, Festus Okoye on Wednesday. The PUNCH had reported that the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, and his commissioners were in a closed-door meeting over the governorship election. The decision was reached after the meeting with the INEC chairman and his team. The postponement is coming about three days before the March 11 date earlier scheduled for the state elections.

A Lagos Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, on Tuesday sentenced a businessman, Ernest Uduebor, who is into oil and gas, to one-year imprisonment for being in possession of a forged Fidelity Bank draft to the tune of N100m. Justice Ramon Oshodi convicted and sentenced him after he pleaded guilty to one count of being in possession of a forged document. EFCC’s prosecuting counsel, Mr Samuel Daji, told the court that Uduebor committed the offence on January 28, 2022. The commission said they conspired to forge several Fidelity Bank managers’ cheques purporting the same to be issued by the bank in favour of So Deep Energy and Logistics Limited. The defendants pleaded not guilty to all the charges preferred against them.

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance in Ebonyi State, Prof Benard Odoh, says it is strange and sub judice for the police to declare him wanted ahead of the Saturday’s polls. He contended that the move by the police was an attempt to undermine and scuttle his chances of winning the governorship election. The police in Ebonyi had, on Monday, declared Odoh and nine of his supporters wanted, over allegations bothering on murder. The Ebonyi State Government fingered the APGA gubernatorial candidate in the monarch’s death. He has repeatedly denied the allegation, reiterating that the late traditional ruler was his father and supporter, saying it was ludicrous for anybody to link him to the dastardly incident.

A 33-year-old Point of Sale operator, Ayoola Seun, was on Tuesday arraigned by the police before an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun State for allegedly defrauding a company of N891,000. 5, Fatimilola St., Afobaje, Itele, Awori, Ota in Ogun State. Adaraloye said that the defendant was given N891,000 to pay some customers by Monie Point International but failed to disburse the money. “The defendant fraudulently converted the sum of N891,000 to personal use instead of fulfilling the agreement between him and the company,” he said. Adeyemi ordered that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and be gainfully employed with evidence of tax payment to the Ogun State government.

China’s Foreign Minister Qin Gang has called for peace talks on the war in Ukraine to be promptly resumed, as he blamed an “invisible hand” for the protraction and escalation of the year-old conflict. Qin said the process of peace talks should begin as soon as possible and the legitimate security concerns of all parties should be respected. “There seems to be an invisible hand, pushing for the protraction and escalation of the conflict and using the Ukraine crisis to serve a certain geopolitical agenda. China recently presented a so-called position paper about its stance on the war, but the paper was largely met with disappointment and scepticism. Qin disclosed China did not provide weapons to Russia amid the conflict, adding that Beijing did not create nor was party to the crisis.

US President Joe Biden will host South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol for a state visit on April 26, the White House announced Tuesday, as the countries ramp up cooperation over the threat from North Korea. The United States and South Korea have been holding increasing numbers of joint drills in the face of growing warnings from nuclear-armed Pyongyang, which has conducted a wave of banned weapons tests in recent months. The prestigious state visit — only the second of Biden’s time in office — “will highlight the importance and enduring strength of the ironclad… alliance” between the two countries, the White House said. Later this month the US and South Korean militaries will hold their largest joint drills in five years. North Korea’s foreign ministry accused the United States of “intentionally” ramping up tensions.

At the Old Bailey on Monday, the court was told Ike Ekweremadu transferred one million naira (£1,802.87) to Obeta on September 24 2021 in a bid to find an organ donor. Giving evidence, Ike Ekweremadu told the court Sonia was doing a masters degree at Newcastle University when she started experiencing “swollen limbs” in December 2019. A further text message from Diwe to Ike Ekweremadu on November 1 2021 added: “The guy matched very well for the transplant. However, the young man, who was allegedly trafficked into the UK for organ harvesting, previously told jurors: “Nobody told me about kidney transplant”. He claimed he was told he had to go ahead with the operation in exchange for 1.2 million naira (around £2,000).

The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency, Mustapha Ahmed, has issued a warning of upcoming severe flooding this year as indicated by predictions from relevant agencies. However, the agency would spread early warning messages to states and local government areas and the Federal Capital Territory. “We have started early this year, as we are ready for early warning and early action. In the same vein, the Director-General of Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, Clement Nze, disclosed that 178 LGAs in 32 states and the FCT had been predicted to experience severe flooding in 2023. We expect that actions should be taken, especially at the sub-national levels, early enough, to mitigate the impact of flooding in the country.”
