Similar attacks have been carried out elsewhere in the southeast of Africa’s most populous country as Nigerians prepare for a February 25 presidential election. The region is still traumatised by a 1967-1970 civil war triggered by a declaration of independence for a Biafra Republic by ethnic Igbo army officers which left a million dead. Many in southeast Nigeria feel alienated from the federal government in Abuja after years of underinvestment. With former Anambra State governor Peter Obi among the frontrunners, some voters in the region are finally ready to believe in change. In his native state, Obi appears smiling on campaign posters dotted around town and country.

Internet connectivity issues at one polling station in the north east made it impossible for election officials to verify voters’ identities. Out of the field of 18 presidential candidates, three front-runners have emerged in recent weeks: the ruling party candidate, the main opposition party candidate and a third party challenger who has drawn strong support from younger voters. Still, Bola Tinubu has the strong support of the ruling All Progressives Congress party as an important backer of the incumbent president. After officials in November announced the decision to redesign Nigeria’s currency, the naira, new bills have been slow to circulate. At the same time, older bank notes stopped being accepted, creating a shortage in a country where many use cash for daily transactions.

The last Nigerian president to leave his successor something tangible to build on was Olusegun Obasanjo, who left office in 2007. Umaru Yar’Adua ruled from his sickbed, almost sparking a constitutional crisis, and he eventually died in office. He lost every time but has grown a power base that cuts across Nigeria’s traditional geographical, religious and ethnic divides. He is one of the only governors in Nigerian history to have left state coffers in better shape than he found them. Whether he (there are no women in the highest echelons of Nigerian politics) will attain great heights and build a nation where peace and justice shall reign.

By ’Wale OlapadeTHE Indian tourism sector will represent a key focus during Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2023, which will return to Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) for its 30th edition from May 1 to 4. This makes India well-positioned to become one of the world’s most important outbound tourism markets and support growth in the Middle East’s tourism sector following the challenges of the global pandemic. Airfares to the Gulf from India are also far lower than for other destinations due to the short distance, further underscoring the convenience and popularity of leisure or business travel. Last year’s Arabian Travel Market (ATM) hosted several high-profile exhibitors from India, including Goa Tourism and Uttar Pradesh Tourism. ATM 2023 will explore the future of sustainable travel in line with its theme of ‘Working Towards Net Zero.’ Having officially initiated its journey to net zero, the conference programme will explore how innovative sustainable travel trends will likely evolve.

The Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commissions, Abdul Rasheed Bawa, on Wednesday, raised an alarm over plans by politicians to buy votes in kind and not only in cash during the general elections. He said, “We have an intel that a lot of politicians have bought some items that they will use to buy votes in kind and not in cash. Bawa further revealed that public officials, corrupt businessmen and not only governors are hoarding old and new naira notes with the intent to buy votes during the presidential election scheduled to hold on Saturday. So, I don’t want to say governors are these but I will say that public servants, either retired or serving and some businessmen with questionable characters are on our radar. “The biggest hurdle is if Nigerians don’t buy into what we are doing but I believe once we are united, we would be able to take inadequacies out of our system,” he stated.

The Financial Secretary of the National Association of Nigerian Travel Agents and Chief Executive Officer of Dart Logistics Limited, Mr Yinka Ladipo, has called on foreign airlines operating in Nigeria to make available lower airfares to Nigerians. In a telephone interview with our correspondent on Monday, he urged the Federal Government to make the foreign exchange to available foreign airlines to enable them to repatriate trapped funds and encourage them to lower their airfares. According to him, the inability of foreign airlines to repatriate their funds has seriously affected the travel agency business, resulting in a hike in airfares. “I think I would blame the foreign airlines and the FG for the issue of the hike in airfares. “These airlines made sure Nigerians do not have access to lower fares, not that they increased their fares.

How often do you see patients with damaged skin as a result of bleaching creams, soaps, and other ingredients in your clinic? Patients come quite frequently to the skin clinic with adverse effects or complications of skin lightening. In a recent analysis, about 28 per cent of patients seen in one year had dermatological conditions associated with skin bleaching practices. Good skin can be achieved through a healthy diet and lifestyle and by using good skin products in moderation. We are concerned that if nothing is done now, we may begin to see a rise in skin cancer, hypertension, diabetes, and kidney failure cases associated with skin bleaching in the future.
