Corruption index: Nigeria’s rating still appalling

In TI’s newly-released 2023 Corruption Perception Index, Nigeria listed 145 among 180 countries and scored 25 out of 100 points. The Bola Tinubu government must rescue the country from sinking deeper into the noxious corruption mire. In 2015, Tinubu’s predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, recalled that $150 billion of Nigeria’s oil wealth was looted in the 10 years to 2015. In a 2023 report, an NGO, Open Society Foundations, linked widespread corruption to Nigeria’s democratic shortcomings. A report by global consultancy, PwC, ominously stated that corruption could gulp 37 per cent of Nigeria’s GDP by 2030.
