The Lagos State Government has inaugurated a 7-man technical committee to probe the recent collapse of a building under construction in Banana Island. The inauguration was conducted by the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Tayo Bamgbose-Martins in Ikeja on Thursday. The committee is also expected to make recommendations on the remaining three structures under construction within the same vicinity and proffer solutions to building collapse in the state. Other members of the Committee are Ayo Adediran, a reputable town planning consultant; Aileme Unuigbe, a structural engineer; Arc. Bamgbose-Martins said members of the technical committee were appointed for their good reputations and urged them to provide insights into how such ugly occurrence could be prevented in the state by unravelling the cause of the Banana Island building collapse.

The Rivers State Government has agreed to an out-of-court settlement with the Federal Governmentnt on the backlog of stamp duty owed to the state. The approval for the state to withdraw the case was granted by the state House of Assembly during plenary on Thursday. This came as all 36 states of the federation are exploring out-of-court settlement over a case filed at the Supreme Court on the refund of funds collected as stamp duties from the state governments and the payment of five per cent consultancy fee. The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Ikuinyi Awani-Ibani, on Thursday, read a letter from Governor Nyesom Wike seeking the approval of the House for the payment of the consultancy fee which will be deducted from source. The lawmakers said the approval for an out-of-court settlement would help to fast-track the refund of all funds collected as stamp duty.

A Russian Sukhoi-34 fighter jet has accidentally bombed the Russian city of Belgorod, around 40km (25 miles) from the border with Ukraine according to the BBC. Regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said authorities had ordered the evacuation of a damaged nine-storey block of flats as a precaution. The bomb landed at an intersection of two roads not far from the city centre and next to residential buildings. Russian jets regularly fly over Belgorod, a city of 370,000, on their way to Ukraine. It lies just north of Ukraine’s second city, Kharkiv, and has come under periodic Ukrainian attack since the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine last year.

He further revealed that 1,262 Nigerian students had filled the evacuation forms as of Wednesday night. Professor Lateef Oladimeji Sanni graduated from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Nigeria with Second Class Upper Division in the Department of Food Science and Technology in 1990. He obtained Master’s and PhD Degrees in the Department of Food Technology, University of Ibadan in 1993 and 1999. He was the Principal Investigator, the Food Developers Initiative and Food Science and Nutrition Network sponsored by Association of African Universities. He was a former Editorial Member of International Journal of Food Science and Technology and a reviewer to many journals at the National and international levels.

A Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ilorin, Kwara State has ordered the remand of two men, Olasunkanmi Olarewaju aka ‘Abore’ and Adeniyi Juwon also known as ‘Jboy’ for allegedly beating their colleague identified as Abiodun Oyinloye to death. They were dragged to court on a two-count of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide contrary to Sections 97 and 221 of the Penal Code. The charge read, “During discreet investigation conducted at SCID Ilorin, it was revealed that you, Olasunkanmi Olarewaju aka Abore ‘m’ conspired with Adeniyi Juwon aka Jboy and attacked Abiodun Oyinloye ‘m’ for stealing N65,000 being the proceeds of dried leave suspected to be Indian hemp which you were selling. “It was further revealed that you, Olasunkanmi Olarewaju aka Abore ‘m’ after you and Adeniyi Juwon aka Jboy killed Abiodun Oyinloye, you, Olasunkanmi Olarewaju, concealed the deceased’s body in a room within his compound. In his ruling, the presiding Magistrate, Mr M. O. Abayomi, ordered their remand at the Federal Correctional Centre, Mandala, Ilorin.
