The Nigerian Government, through its ministers of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development and Foreign Affairs, has said it will airlift Nigerians stranded in Sudan back home as part of efforts to bring them back amidst the ongoing crisis in the country. The government has set in motion a mechanism to ensure the safe extraction of Nigerians from Sudan to Nigeria amidst the humanitarian crisis and attendant crisis caused by the conflict, which is forcing many to flee Sudan through contiguous borders. The ministers decried the growing humanitarian crisis and empathized with the entire civilian population, including Nigerian students and other members of the Nigerian community caught up in the ongoing crisis between the Sudanese Army and the Paramilitary rapid support forces. The Nigerian Government has urged those caught up in the crisis to reach out to the Nigerian mission in Sudan for further instructions or call listed numbers, while assuring parents of students in Sudan to advise their wards to remain calm and maintain constant communication with officials of the Nigerian Embassy in Sudan until they are airlifted. The government emphasizes that concrete plans are already underway to deploy air transport to evacuate all stranded Nigerian citizens at the earliest.

Singapore is set to hang a man, Tangaraju Suppiah, for trafficking cannabis, in the city-state’s latest controversial execution, the BBC reports. Tangaraju, 46, was convicted of “abetting by engaging in a conspiracy to traffic” over a delivery of 1kg (35oz) of cannabis from Malaysia to Singapore in 2013. Singapore law mandates the death penalty for drug trafficking and has lesser penalties for couriers. It follows a high-profile execution last year of an intellectually impaired man over a drugs charge. I’m no scientist. In fact, I’m a journalist and writer. It’s the reasoning to survive which would seem to have eluded us as a country, as a people, as black people. It’s why Nigeria has languished at the bottom of the innovative ladder that others have climbed to attain higher goals for their citizens. I do not know how that concept died or became obsolete in the consciousness of universities and why that essential nexus between Town and Gown faded into oblivion.
