This assistance comes as part of the UAE's continued efforts to support the Sudanese people and reflects its keenness to meet their needs based on its deep-rooted relations with Sudan, and commitment to supporting countries during crises and emergencies. Okonjo-Iweala warns incoming Governors against debt acquisition
Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala on Monday warned incoming State Governors against acquisition of debt. According to Debt Management Office (DMO) in its Q4 report of 2022 fiscal year, Nigeria’s total domestic debt stock was N27.55 trillion, while external debt stock was N18.70 trillion (US$41.69 billion). She said: “We have challenges on the fiscal, debt, and monetary policy fronts. “While the debt-to-GDP ratio may not look so alarming, as revenues decline, the burden of debt servicing has increased dramatically. The debt service to revenue ratio is certainly alarming, at 83.2% in 2021 and 96.3% in 2022, according to the World Bank.

Nigerian musician Seun Kuti arrested for allegedly assaulting police officer
The Nigerian musician Seun Kuti, son of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, was arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer, Lagos state police said on Monday. An order was made for the arrest of Kuti, a Grammy-nominated saxophonist and singer, on Saturday after a viral video showed him on a road, shouting and apparently pushing and smacking a police officer, police said. He turned himself in early on Monday to the headquarters of the Lagos state police command, accompanied by a lawyer and a family representative, a police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, said on Twitter. A charismatic figure and activist who was bitterly critical of Nigeria’s military regimes and corrupt elite, Fela Kuti died in 1997 but retains a fervent following. In 2019, Kuti and the group were nominated for a Grammy, the top US music awards, for their album Black Times in the global music category.

Foreign airlines blame fare hike, N582/$1 RoE on Central Bank, instability | The Guardian Nigeria News - Nigeria and World News
Foreign airlines, yesterday, pushed back on the recent upward review of Rate of Exchange (RoE) and attendant spike in the cost of international air travel, saying they were induced by the Central Bank’s exchange rate and local market volatility. The clearing house for over 290 world airlines, IATA, in a statement Monday, reiterated that airfares for international flights from Nigeria are denominated in U.S. “These conversions use the official prevailing exchange rate provided by the country’s financial system. “IATA simply applies the spot rate at which the Central Bank of Nigeria sells USD through banks to the market, at its fortnightly retail foreign exchange auctions. if the rate at which the CBN sells USD goes up, the exchange rate applied to airfares will follow and vice versa,” IATA said.

Nigerian Afrobeat star Kuti arrested over alleged police assault
Seun Kuti was detained at the Lagos State police headquarters after turning himself in, according to police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin, who tweeted photos of the celebrity in handcuffs. The son of Nigerian musical hero and political agitator Fela, who himself was serially detained by Nigerian military regimes, Kuti was “captured on video assaulting a police officer in uniform”, the police said. Hilda Baci, Nigerian Chef Breaks Guinness World Record for Longest Cooking Hours
Nigerian Chef Hilda Effiong Bassey, also known as Hilda Baci, made history on May 15, 2023, by breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest cooking time by an individual. Baci’s cooking marathon challenge began on May 11 at Amore Gardens in Lekki, Lagos State, where she cooked continuously for four days. By 08:32 am on May 15, Baci had cooked for 88 hours and 32 minutes, a time that equaled the record set by Indian chef Lata Tondon in 2019. Notable Nigerian leaders, including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, President-elect Bola Tinubu, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, have voiced their support for the young Nigerian chef. Nigeria loses N313bn as oil theft, shutdown rise, operators demand tough sanctions
), gave an order last week directing the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission to monitor crude oil production by taking over the regulatory oversight of crude oil export terminals nationwide. Nigeria’s oil production had been on the rise since September 2022, following concerted efforts by the Federal Government and stakeholders to curb oil theft in the sector. The 1.258mbpd oil production in January 2023 was about 23,000bpd higher than the 1.235mbpd crude oil output in December 2022. But the volume dropped to 1.27mbpd in March, putting an end to the seven-month run in Nigeria’s oil output. To help stem the loss of crude, The PUNCH recently reported that the Federal Government directed the NUPRC to monitor crude oil production and take over the regulatory oversight of crude oil export terminals nationwide.
