The incident occurred at the Doruwa drinking joint opposite Polaris Bank, affecting some buildings within the area while an unspecified number of persons were injured in the incident. Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan called for nationwide “freedom” protests on Sunday, after his brief arrest and detention this week triggered deadly unrest. For months, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party leader has waged a campaign of defiance against the military. At least 10 senior PTI leaders have been arrested since the protests began, one of Khan’s lawyers said. As operatives of the Delta State Police Command continue to mount pressure on criminals in the state, suspected kidnappers of a couple, Mrs Okutonye Efetobore, have been arrested. The duo were abducted on April 27 in Ughellli town, and a ransom of one million naira was paid before their release. But uncomfortable with the development, the new Commissioner of Police, CP Wale Abass, on assumption of office, directed the Command Decoy Squad to embark on an intelligence-led investigation and ensure that the kidnappers were apprehended. He said when the apartment of the suspect was searched, a bag containing a locally-fabricated pistol and three rounds of 7.62 AK47 live ammunition were recovered. He quoted CP Abass as assuring residents of the Delta that the command would be working round the clock to ensure that those terrorizing the state were brought to justice.

An 18-year-old man, Biliya Lawal, has died after receiving a punch in the stomach during a fight with his 14-year-old neighbour, simply identified as Danladi. He said, “Both Lawal, who is about 18-year-old, and Danladi, a 14-year-old boy, lived in the same compound at Gadabiu in Kwali area council. I don’t know what in particular led to the exchange of words, but it must have been a serious issue. The two exchanged blows and in the process, Danladi’s punch hit Lawal in his stomach. He was immediately rushed to the Kwali General Hospital where the doctor who attended to them pronounced him dead.”

The Nigeria Army says 6,251 newly-recruited soldiers would be deployed to counter activities of criminal elements. The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Faruk Yahaya, made the disclosure on Saturday in Zaria, Kaduna State at the passing-out parade of the 84 regular recruits intake. He said with the passing-out, the strength and combat efficiency of the Nigerian Army would be enhanced with 6,251 well-trained men. The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr Paul Odama, on Friday, paraded a medical doctor, Ayodele Joseph, for allegedly sedating and raping a nurse. The suspect was reportedly performing an operation on the nurse in his hospital in Ilorin, Kwara State, when the incident happened. Joseph, the Chief Medical Director of Ayodele Hospital, Sawmill, Ilorin, was among 13 suspects paraded before journalists at the police headquarters. The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Ayodele Joseph, during the treatment, sedated the patient, which led her to become unconscious. Odama said the medical doctor would be charged with rape at the conclusion of ongoing investigation.
