The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has flagged off training schemes for graduates and artisans in Ekiti state for skills acquisition and gaining of work experience in public and private entities. The Director General of NDE, Abubakar Nuhu Fikpo who spoke during the flag-off in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, said the trainings were under the Graduate Attachment Programme (GAP) and the Environmental Beautification Training Scheme (EBTS) of the Special Public Works department. Represented by the NDE state coordinator, Sanusi Akeem, the DG explained that the GAP training was important to expose the 48 beneficiaries to professional experience by attaching them to offices in the society. He declared that the agency was determined to banish poverty in society by training and encouraging youths to acquire skills for economic development. “The skills set offered under the EBTS are categorized into three (3) sub-headings.

The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has said the U.S. dollar index decreased by 1.6 per cent month-on-month (m-o-m) in July, erasing gains from the previous period. The dollar index rose for the second consecutive month in June, increasing marginally by 0.3 per cent m-o-m.OPEC said this in its Monthly Oil Market Report for August on Friday. According to the OPEC report, Year-on-Year (Y-o-Y), the index was down by 5.2 per cent. The OPEC report said the dollar experienced mixed movement against major developed market currencies for a second consecutive month in July. It said it recovered against the euro by 2.2 per cent m-o-m, but receded against the yen and the pound by 0.2 per cent and 2.2 per cent, respectively, over the same period.

President Mohamed Bazoum’s son, Salem, is critically ill, ECOWAS leaders were told at their meeting on Thursday, according to an official present at the meeting. The West African leaders were told that Salem had lost about 10 kilograms since he was detained alongside his father following the 26 July coup in Niger. Mr Bazoum’s daughter, Zazia Bazoum, told UK Guardian that her family is living in a very difficult situation. PREMIUM TIMES had reported how the junta leaders prevented the ECOWAS delegation, led by Mr Abubakar, from leaving the Niger airport and meeting with the coup leaders or Mr Bazoum. At the Thursday meeting, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire and others called for the deployment of force in Niger to restore constitutional rule.

Thousands of Niger coup supporters took to the streets on Friday to protest against plans by West African nations to deploy a military force to the country, as a key regional meeting on a possible intervention was scrapped. The last-minute cancellation came as thousands of coup supporters rallied near a French military base in Niger on Friday. Niger’s new leaders have accused former colonial power France, a close Bazoum ally, of being behind the hardline ECOWAS stance against the coup. The Nigerian army has denied any association with former Niger Delta militant leader Mujahid Asari-Dokubo and his security outfit. Asari-Dokubo had claimed on a podcast that his private military company was working with the government and the military in various states. However, the Director of Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Information emerged on Friday that gunmen allegedly killed two soldiers attached to the Ekaago-Ogboloma-Adada Road project in the Abia/Odual Local Government Area of Rivers State. It was gathered that the two soldiers were killed by the gunmen to pave the way for the abduction of the foreman, a foreigner, handling the project. The assailants it was further gathered went away with the rifles of the slain soldiers, whisked the foreman, three other workers at the project site, and a farmer they met while fleeing. The Defence Headquarters says Nigerian troops have, in the last week, killed 38 terrorists, apprehended 242 others and rescued 89 kidnapped hostages in different operations across the country. Mr Buba, a brigadier general, said the apprehended suspects comprised 175 gunmen/criminals, 20 kidnappers, 30 collaborators and 17 pipeline vandals. He said the troops had also within the week killed three terrorists, arrested 13 suspected criminals, and five kidnappers and rescued three kidnapped hostages. According to him, troops of Operation Whirl Stroke also killed seven terrorists, arrested three suspects and rescued three kidnapped hostages. In the North West, Buba said troops of Operation Hadarin Daji neutralised five terrorists, arrested eight suspects and rescued nine kidnapped hostages while several terrorists’ camps were destroyed.

The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) says, its Non-OPEC oil supply is expected to expand by 1.5 million barrels per day (mb/d) in 2023. OPEC said this in its Monthly Oil Market Report for August obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday. NAN reports that Non-OPEC oil producers are crude oil-producing nations outside of the OPEC group and shale oil producers. According to the report, for 2024, non-OPEC oil production is projected to grow by 1.4 mb/d, unchanged from the previous assessment. According to the report, the OECD is anticipated to expand by about 0.3 mb/d, with OECD Americas contributing the largest increase.
