In 2007 President Umaru Yar’dua appointed seven women out of 39 cabinet ministers. President Goodluck Jonathan (2010-2015), during his campaign in Jos, promised to allocate to women 35 per cent of ministerial and ambassadorial postings. He appointed more women to cabinet positions than his predecessors (military and civilian), assigning the most pivotal ministries of the economy to women. The performance and track records of the women ministers are there for reference in public opinion. Nigerians will expect nothing but the best from the women appointed to serve as ministers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

MORE than two months after President Bola Tinubu extinguished petrol subsidies a month ahead of schedule, he has been largely silent on the fate of the four moribund state-owned refineries. At his inauguration on May 29, his “subsidy is gone!” blast triggered record-breaking petrol prices across the country. Like his predecessors, Tinubu has misdiagnosed Nigeria’s energy predicament: a major crude exporter with current production OPEC quota of 1.8 million barrels per day, it irrationally imports refined petroleum products because its refineries are comatose. Prices soared to between N568pl and N617pl in July on the back of higher crude oil prices. Tinubu, a former oil sector executive, should realise that the real catastrophe is Nigeria’s dependence on refined petroleum products.

President Bola Tinubu had recently increased the retirement age of the judges and some people had seen it as a good development. The lawyer stated that though the state high court judges can retire at age 65, they can, nevertheless, work till they reach 80. Another lawyer, Victor Opara (SAN), stated that robust healthcare schemes for the judges should be put in place and dutifully implemented. Ogu Ogedi, a lawyer, argued that the Bench didn’t need an increase in retirement age. He said an increase in retirement age could never enhance productivity, not even the experience as some people would want to argue.

Vice President Kashim Shettima said on Tuesday that with the removal of fuel subsidy, Nigeria is projected to save over 15 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions in one year. Shettima said this at the one-day workshop organised by the National Council on Climate Change with the theme “Unpacking the outcomes of the 58 sessions of the subsidiary bodies of the United Nations framework convention on climate change,” organised by the National Council on Climate Change. “At the onset of this administration, President Bola Tinubu took the bold step to put an end to the petrol subsidy. Preliminary analysis conducted by the National Council on Climate Change on the co-benefits of fuel subsidy removal indicates that there has been about a 30 per cent reduction in daily fuel consumption, amounting to about 20 million litres, equivalent to an estimated daily saving of 42,800 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. “When projected over one year, it amounts to over 15 million tonnes of CO2 saved, representing about 40 per cent greenhouse gas reduction from the baseline projection of 45 million metric tonnes of total GHG carbon dioxide equivalent by 2030.
