Authorities in India’s northeastern state of Nagaland have closed schools in the state until Aug. 26 following an increase in the cases of conjunctivitis (eye flu) among school children. According to the local government officials on Tuesday, cases of conjunctivitis have been reported in Dimapur, Chumoukedima, Niuland, and Mon districts. “Also to prevent the exponential surge of eye flu cases not only among students but also among teachers and parents,” an official said. Since July 1, over 1,000 cases of eye flu have been reported in the state. Conjunctivitis, or pink eye, is an irritation or inflammation of the conjunctiva, which covers the white part of the eyeball.

Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State has unveiled an interim plan to alleviate the effects of the recent fuel subsidy removal and ongoing economic challenges for the state’s residents. In response, Soludo announced a 10% salary increase for all public servants effective January 2023 to combat rising inflation. He also revealed that pensioners and public servants would receive a monthly non-taxable cash award of N12,000 for September to December 2023. Additionally, the government will distribute rice to over 300,000 households across the state and exempt vulnerable groups from taxation. In the long term, the government aims to distribute oil palm and coconut seedlings to households to create a sustainable agricultural ecosystem.

An Abuja-based businesswoman, Mrs Juliet Okpako, is currently devastated after losing N2.8m to a fraudster who posed as a bank official. The distraught woman said trouble started when a lady contacted her on the telephone and claimed to be calling from her bank. She said I should check my phone and send back the message they sent me to her. I rushed to my bank, but before I got there, all the N2.8m in my bank had been withdrawn. The police and then the bank said they could not trace the numbers that all the money and airtime were sent.

Residents of Kwara state have been lamenting the sudden increase in prices of bread. A cross-section of respondents, who spoke with the Tribune Online on the sudden price hike of bread talked about causes and way out. It was gathered that prices of bread within the ranges of N200, N300 and N800 had increased by at least 100 per cent. Terna Jacob, camp manager at Agagbe Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Gwer West local government area of Benue State, has decried the condition of the camp, lamenting how pregnant women now make use of toilets as delivery rooms. According to him, parents of children down with measles now resort to native herbs to treat their kids due to lack of medicine in the camp. He disclosed that the camp in the past one week recorded two deaths at birth while six children are sick with measles. Narrating the plight of inmates at the camp on Monday, Jacob told newsmen that hunger, sickness and over population have been the challenges confronting the camp. Also, they (pregnant women) could not get money to go hospital so they delivered in the camp.

Major cities are experiencing rapid urbanisation than its infrastructure development can match for decent living, Victor Gbonegun reports. The UN-Habitat World Cities Report 2022 predicted that the world would continue to urbanise over the next three decades from 56 per cent in 2021 to 68 per cent in 2050. This, the report says translates into an increase of 2.2 billion urban residents, living mostly in Africa and Asia. The National Emergency Management Agency, on Sunday, said it had commenced arrangements for the distribution of 180 trucks of rice to various states as recommended by the National Economic Council. On Thursday the Federal Government announced a N5bn palliative for each state of the federation and 180 trucks of rice as part of measures to assuage the pains of the subsidy removal. When contacted on Sunday and asked whether the lifting of the trucks of rice to states had yet to start, the spokesperson for NEMA, Ezekiel Manzo replied, “I’m not saying that lifting has not started. That’s what I mean.”Manzo explained that the council had given NEMA the responsibility to move the commodities, adding that agency would also distribute relief items to some states. In order to cushion the effect of subsidy removal, the federal government released five trucks of rice to each state last week.
