Chiefs treating mighty upset as timely reality checkChiefs treating mighty upset as timely reality check[Image: Stuff.co.nz]Don’t panic. That’s Chiefs head coach Clayton McMillan’s message in the aftermath of what he labelled a reality check against the Reds on Friday night. Like stand-in captain Luke Jacobson, who was almost lost for words immediately after the match, McMillan was clearly disappointed and frustrated with their shock 25-22 loss, but was quick to point out it wasn’t necessarily a bad thing to taste defeat ahead of the looming playoffs. A garage fire in Dunedin is to be investigated. A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said crews from Roslyn and Dunedin City stations were called to reports of the blaze in Cockerell St, in the suburb of Brockville, about 11.30pm yesterday. When crews arrived, the small garage - about 2m by 4m - was well alight. A further appliance from St Kilda station was sent but stood down en-route. A fire investigator would attend today to determine the cause of the blaze, the spokesman said.

There is an enormous difference between ACT and the Māori Party and the rest of the political spectrum, and that is, when ACT and the Māori Party say it, they mean it. The Greens do believe the things they promise but are unfortunately so incompetent they couldn’t get laid in a monkey brothel wearing banana costumes. It’s funny that Stuff have suddenly realised David Seymour is an incredibly smart and clever Politician. Both ACT and the Māori Party are polling higher than they ever have in their political history and that in of itself speaks to the Polarisation of NZ politics. This adds to the sense I have that those buyers have been let down by the system. This increased the supply of money, helped suppress interest rates, provided liquidity to the banking system encouraging banks to lend, thus helping drive the explosion in bank mortgage lending and house prices in 2020-2021. Statistics NZ's household living-costs price indexes rose 7.7% in the 12 months to March, with mortgage interest costs up 38%. I believe the system risks letting down many of those 2020-2021 first home buyers and we need to acknowledge that. Either way the system still feels like it needs major surgery if home ownership's to be a more sustainable and less speculative option.

PHOTO: SHANNON THOMSONNasa's Wānaka operation has successfully launched its second super pressure balloon from the town’s airport. Nasa earlier tweeted that its team had begun inflating the super pressure balloon partially with helium before it will be released to float up into Earth’s atmosphere where it may circle the Southern Hemisphere for up to 100 days. Wānaka airport gave the all-clear to air traffic control and roads around the site have been closed. Just after midday, the super pressure balloon was in the air, climbing at approximately 1000 feet (304 metres) per minute. In a post to the Nasa Wallops Twitter account yesterday, the agency said the third launch window for the football-stadium-sized balloon would open today between 8am and 11.30am.

On Thursday, I reported that the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) House Price Index, which adjusts for differences in the mix of properties sold each month, fell by another 0.8% in April, and is now down 17.5% from its November 2021 peak. Separately, AMP Capital chief economist, Shane Oliver, posted the below chart on Twitter showing the extent of the price falls in an historical context:AdvertisementThe 40% run up in prices over the pandemic has been followed by the sharpest price crash in generations. Or, are “more price falls to come after a bounce as rates hikes have their lagged impact on the economy (and hence property demand and supply)”. My view is that New Zealand house prices will probably fall until the October election, after which uncertainty will lift. Thus, when the Reserve Bank does begin to ease, house prices could bounce back hard.

The Government will continue to invest in infrastructure to make the economy more resilient to extreme weather, even as budgets are being reined in elsewhere. Robertson said Budget 2023 would include funding for more investment in the infrastructure rebuild from cyclone and floods, as well as “national resilience projects” to protect communities from future risks. “Decades of failing to maintain and enhance our infrastructure has been exacerbated by failing to plan and build for population growth. Robertson said it was the Finance Minister’s job was to invest for the future and provide core services, while maintaining enough room on the balance sheet to respond to crises. Government finances were currently in a position that allowed investment in infrastructure, while supporting the most vulnerable members of society.
