Here's our summary of key economic events overnight that affect New Zealand, with news there is still no sign yet that the Chinese economy is back driving international trade. If there is a bright spot, it is car sales, and these are expected to stay healthy for a while yet. China said its retail sales rose in April by a strong amount, up +18% above year ago levels. China also reported that industrial production rose by +5.6% year-on-year in April, but this was below market forecasts of an +11% rise, so it comes with a tinge of disappointment. That means the TWI-5 is now at 70.5 and up a mere +10 bps from this time yesterday.

Six people have been confirmed dead in a fire at a New Zealand hostel often used to house people deported from Australia. Authorities said the roof had collapsed on Loafers Lodge in Wellington after a fire, causing “a lot of destruction” with a further 11 people still unaccounted for (Stuff.co.nz). Firefighters helped 50 to 60 people escape, with no sprinklers in the building exacerbating the crisis. According to Filipa Payne, of the deportee advocacy group Route 501, many of the residents of the crowded hostel were people recently deported from Australia under section 501 of the Migration Act (SMH). “This is a horrible tragedy that will affect people that have been placed there through a traumatic and barbaric system,” she said.

You can visit their website at https://treasury.govt.nz/ to access the latest budget information and expenditure breakdowns. New Zealand Government Budget: The annual budget outlines the government’s revenue and expenditure plans for the upcoming fiscal year. The budget is usually released in May each year, and you can find it on the New Zealand Treasury website or the government’s official budget website. The tax information is available anyway. National’s proposal is that lacking in detail and that superficial that you have to wonder what its vaunted Policy Machine is actually up to.

It has placed a heavy rain watch on Northland beginning 3pm Thursday until 3am Friday. On Friday and into Saturday, the gales will tend west-northwest, affecting much of the upper North Island from Taranaki to Hawke’s Bay northward. However, with already saturated ground, any further heavy rain could be problematic, and strong wind is an added complication. At this stage, Fernandes said MetService is unclear just how much damage the fast-moving weather system will do.
