HISTORYThe Scrap Iron FlotillaMike CarltonWilliam Heinemann, $34.99When Australians look in the rear-vision mirror of history to the Second World War, much of what we see are the horrors and heroics of the conflict in the Asia Pacific. Darwin, Broome, Kokoda, Borneo, Burma – after the fall of Singapore, Australia’s hopes and fears all lay to our immediate north. But we had been at war with Germany for two years before any of that began, when Robert Menzies made the announcement on September 3 at 9.15pm, Sydney time, that, as a consequence of Britain declaring war on Germany after the invasion of Poland, “Australia is also at war”. Lieutenant Commander Rodney Rhoades (left), captain of the Vendetta, with Hector “Hec” Waller, captain of the Stuart and overall commander of The Scrap Iron Flotilla. Less than an hour after Menzies’ broadcast, this British Admiralty telegram was forwarded to all Australian ships: “Commence Hostilities At Once With Germany.”

Nigeria play Libya in the quarter-finals of the ongoing 2022 African U-21 Men’s Nations Volleyball Championship in Tunisia on Friday (today), despite losing to the hosts in their final group game on Wednesday. The result means Nigeria finished second in their group, two points behind Tunisia. If you look critically at the minor scores, Nigeria were leading before Tunisia came from behind to win the first and third set,” Mohammed said. We cannot afford to make mistakes in the quarter-finals because it means we are out of the title race. Nigeria played against the crowd, they came out to support their team and Tunisia won.”

The Chief Justice of the Libyan Supreme Court, Mohammed Al-Hafi, announced Thursday the reactivation of the constitutional circuit court which has been suspended since 2016. Al-Hafi said in a video statement that the Supreme Court's General Assembly decided unanimously to reopen the constitutional circuit court, saying it promises all Libyans that it would remain unbiased and stick to the rule of law. Politicians, jurists, and political parties have called for years to reactivate the constitutional circuit court so that it can decide on the authorities of current bodies, especially after some of them took advantage of each other and exploited certain political bodies due to the absence of the constitutional circuit court. Those bodies bypassed their constitutional duties and legislated laws to serve certain parties without considering the governing constitutional rules. The constitutional circuit court of the Supreme Court adjudicates cases and appeals of constitutional and legal aspects.

Date Available On Demand Duration 1 hourAlthough industrial control systems have switched from analog to digital many decades ago, the problem of having multiple proprietary protocols preventing these systems from properly integrating with each other still persists to this day. OPC UA was conceived with the purpose to address this problem, but its success was only partial, and it’s still not as pervasive and adopted as it should be. MQTT is changing that scenario quickly, with smart sensors, cameras, and now even PLCs natively implementing this old but revamped protocol and edge computing is one of the vectors behind this transformation. This presentation will explore how MQTT has been helping system integrators to overcome the challenges of hybrid integrations for Industry 4.0 projects that include OPC UA and other protocols. In a unanimous vote, the General Assembly of the Supreme Court decided today to reactivate the Constitutional Circuit to consider and decide on appeals. The decision, announced by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Counsellor Mohamed Al-Hafi, stated that the court “promises to Libyans that it will not take sides with any of the parties and will raise the status of the country and the established constitutional principles and rules.”The constitutional court has ceased looking into constitutional cases for nearly six years. Its last decision was in 2014 when it ruled some elements of the Constitutional Declaration that led to the election of the 2014 House of Representatives were unconstitutional. This contributed to the split in Libya and the re-emergence of the rump of the General National Congress and its current unelected child, the High State Council. The announcement may have monumental consequences on Libya’s politics, if Libya’s political streams, and most importantly its militias, abide by the constitutional court’s decisions.
