Clearly a better job has to be done in educating voters when pretty complex issues drop on voters’ shoulders. More than 300,000 applications to the electoral register have been made online, leading to the greatest addition ever to the voter pool in time for the referendums. The big additional intake means a large number of new voters are likely to cast their ballots for the first time. This enables people to register to vote at any time of year, both online as well as in paper form. Given the lazy attitude of local councils towards the register for decades, a national focus is welcome.

Barclays Bank is certainly making life difficult for many customers as it continues to take an axe to its branches. Barclays shut its branch in Ilkley two years ago although in its defence it hasn't been the only bank to desert the town. Or in extremis, he will bank the occasional cheque he receives at a Barclays branch when he is down in London on business. Bank branch closures, I fear, will be a recurring theme this year. It's not quite all doom and gloom on the bank branch front.

The campaigns, particularly by those advocating a Yes vote to both questions, have been distinctly underwhelming. Photo: Getty ImagesIrish citizens will be asked to vote on Friday in two referendums to change our Constitution. When a government proposes constitutional change, the minimum to be expected is that it properly explains why such change is necessary in the first place, and then robustly makes the case for it. The family founded on marriage means the unit based on a marriage between two people without distinction as to their sex. In either referendum, if citizens vote No, there will be no relevant change to the Constitution.
