Voting down referendums will ‘reaffirm’ Constitution’s sexist language, Varadkar warnsBy Cate McCurry, PAVoting down the referendums will “reaffirm” sexist language and fail to recognise family care in the Constitution, the Taoiseach has claimed. “That’s why I’m encouraging people to vote yes on that. “That’s why organisations like Family Carers Ireland, for example, the National Women’s Council are all supporting a Yes vote. “The only guarantee is that if there’s a no vote, the sexist language about women our constitution will be reaffirmed. “I would say please, please come out and vote yes on Friday.

As for the Bank, for the first time there is a majority of women on the Monetary Policy Committee that sets interest rates. But having strong female voices in economics matters – as does encouraging people from less privileged backgrounds to embrace the subject. Male economists, it said, are more confident in expressing a view than women, even in areas where both are experts. In the City, off-putting aspects for women include the macho bonus culture, long-hours, testosterone-fuelled deal-making, and boozy dinners. Men are more careful about their behaviour and language after some high-profile scandals, including at the CBI and Odey Asset Management.

March 8th referendumsTalk around the March 8th referendums hasn't been too widespread, but it will be the big topic ahead of the votes on Friday, March 8th. The family amendment proposes extending the meaning of family beyond one defined by marriage and to include those based on “durable” relationships. The care amendment proposes deleting references to a woman’s roles and duties in the home, and replacing it with a new article that acknowledges family carers. Even one no result would be a huge surprise, as all the polls are suggesting an overwhelming yes vote. All the Government Coalition parties have been campaigning for a yes vote, along with most of the Opposition.

The costs for governments across the eurozone edged lower at the beginning of the week, as investors looked towards the European Central Bank's -url=https://www.irishexaminer.com/maintopics/interest-rates_topic-84884.html] interest rate[/url] decision on Thursday. The interest rate for Ireland to borrow money for 10 years fell to 2.8% as Germany's 10-year bond eased to 2.4%. The ECB is widely expected to leave interest rates at the current record high of 4%. But investors will listen for any hints from ECB president Christine Lagarde on when borrowing costs might start to fall and look for clues in updated economic projections. Eurozone yields have risen this year as traders tempered expectations for big and fast rate cuts as economies and inflation proved stronger than expected.

Such thoughtless attitudes are exemplified in the AG’s own singling out of “socialism” as a special evil from which parents surely would want to protect their children. Sadly enough, an unexamined allegiance to “capitalism” resembles an objectionable form of “faith,” incompatible with democracy’s (or even the Christian faith’s) foundations. If we have no educators and institutions which help young people think through these notions, we foster the antagonistic stimulus-response discourse of today. Of course, mere knowledge is not virtue, but agency deprived of insight is both dangerous and the antithesis of virtue and moral goodness. James G. Hart is a professor emeritus at Indiana University.
