Such thoughtless attitudes are exemplified in the AG’s own singling out of “socialism” as a special evil from which parents surely would want to protect their children. Sadly enough, an unexamined allegiance to “capitalism” resembles an objectionable form of “faith,” incompatible with democracy’s (or even the Christian faith’s) foundations. If we have no educators and institutions which help young people think through these notions, we foster the antagonistic stimulus-response discourse of today. Of course, mere knowledge is not virtue, but agency deprived of insight is both dangerous and the antithesis of virtue and moral goodness. James G.
