Shane Lowry says Olympic gold would heal his Open hurtBy Phil Casey, PA Golf CorrespondentShane Lowry believes winning Olympic gold will make up for missing out on a second Open title, as Ireland teammate Rory McIlroy targets his biggest win for a decade. Lowry held a two-shot halfway lead at Royal Troon, where McIlroy missed the cut, but struggled to a third round of 77 and eventually finished sixth, five shots behind Olympic champion Xander Schauffele. “Straightaway after that I sort of felt like I have a chance to redeem myself here in a couple of weeks. Asked what a gold medal would do for his year, McIlroy said: “It’s well documented that I haven’t won one of the big four in 10 years. “The last time you guys (the media) saw me, I didn’t give a very good account of myself at Troon.

Residents of Dundrum village in Co Tipperary have gone to the High Court in a bid to challenge any attempt to use a local hotel to house asylum seekers. The local hotel, Dundrum House Hotel, for the last two years has accommodated Ukrainian refugees and locals are objecting to any continued use of the hotel to house international protection applicants. They want to stop the use of the Planning and Development (exempted Development) regulations of 2023, which allows buildings to be used to house international protections applicants. They also want an injunction stopping the former mansion and estate, Dundrum House Hotel, being used to house international protection applicants. Two years ago, locals in Dundrum welcomed 277 Ukrainian refugees to Dundrum House Hotel.

The tech sector’s recruitment slowdown, especially in research and development roles, reflects broader economic uncertainties. This has led to increased demand for roles in risk management, ESG and operational resilience,” she said.

After months of heavy grey clouds it may be hard to believe that climate change – or more accurately – global “heating” is having any effect on Ireland. Yet despite the gloomy and cool conditions Ireland’s climate is changing in line with the predictions of climate science. The entire business model for Irish agricultural exports is reliant on a stable climate but this is no longer guaranteed. Driving the sea-level rise is cumulative ice loss from the world’s glaciers and from the Greenland ice sheet which reached a record high in 2023. There is little point trying to “balance” the existential threats posed by climate change and loss of nature with snippets of good news, however welcome they are.

A potted economic history of colonialism in IrelandFor postgrowth and degrowth economists, the Irish case is both intriguing and urgent. Ireland’s unsustainable FDI-agricultural economy is at once a sordid product of its colonial subjugation, and a source of deep cultural attachment. Throughout this period, it was also a laboratory for the first conceptions of economic growth and national income. This period created a firm path dependency for Irish economic development, or the lack thereof. The Irish economy has shattered its ecological limits.
