"We're very happy to have proved the doubters wrong so it's a good day for the Irish." Fintan McCarthy says it's the 'privilege of a lifetime' rowing alongside O'Donovan, who is Ireland's first ever athlete to medal at three Olympic games. It was amazing to be here in front of all the Irish supporting us. "I think that's a fluke to be honest," laughs O'Donovan after being told he's Ireland's most decorated olympian ever.

The restructuring of US forces in Japan will see the creation of a new operational command capable of fighting a war alongside a new Japanese joint command. It is, according to defence secretary Lloyd Austin, “the most significant change to US Forces Japan since its creation and one of the strongest improvements in our military ties with Japan in 70 years”. The extra funding for the Philippines’ military and coast guard reflects the deepening of Washington’s security partnership with Manila since Ferdinand Marcos Jr became president in 2022. Japan and the Philippines recently signed an agreement on security and defence co-operation. While the US and China are shoring up their strategic positions, it is essential that they focus on their diplomatic relationship and deepen their dialogue.

Pan smashed his own 100m freestyle world record, shaving 0.40 seconds off the previous mark he set at the World Championships in Doha in February, to humble a slew of champion rivals in Paris. In a separate TV interview on Wednesday, Pan described how frequently the Chinese swimmers are drug tested in Paris. “I’m upset right now because you don’t win 100 freestyle by a body length on that field. “That’s not real, you don’t beat that field. Kyle Chalmers, David Popovici, Jack Alexy, you don’t beat those guys by one full body length in 100 freestyle.

From myself, Ultán Corcoran, and Niall McIntyre earlier in the day, it was a joy to bring all the Team Ireland updates to your screens. It was a mixed bag as some of our athletes' Olympics came to an end, but Daire Lynch and Philip Doyle provided the crucial spark. Sean Waddilove and Robert Dickson's Skiff medal race was postponed earlier today alongside Eve McMahon's Dingy Race 2. That means the Skiff sailing duo are expected to resume action in their medal race at 12.13pm tomorrow. Athletics also features for the first time this Olympics, where the 4x400m Mixed Relay team minus Rhasidat Adeleke go in their heats at 6.22pm among many other Team Ireland track and field stars.

That will be a very hard result to swallow for Daina Moorehouse. A 4-1 split decision in the end. There will be no quarter-final meeting for Daina Moorehouse! It went down to split decision and the French 28-year-old has controversially come out on top. In the most impartial way possible, it seems like the completely wrong decision as Daina Moorehouse clearly landed the more influential shots.
