Ustad Rashid Khan. Celebrated Indian music maestro Ustad Rashid Khan passed away while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kolkata on Tuesday, reported hindustantimes.com. Chief minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, expressed deep shock at the death of Rashid Khan. Rashid Khan was an Indian classical musician in the Hindustani music tradition. In a story told in several versions, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi once remarked that Rashid Khan was the ‘assurance for the future of Indian vocal music’.

Bill layo inam pao scheme: Ludhiana sales tax department discovers tax evasion by cafe
The sales tax department has unearthed tax evasion by a city café after customers uploaded their bills from the eatery under the ‘bill lao inam pao’ scheme which were not reflected in government records. According to deputy commissioner of state taxes (DCST), Ludhiana 3, Darvir Raj Kaur, a team of assistant commissioner of state taxes (ACST) along with state tax officers and supporting staff conducted an inspection after customers uploaded their bills from the aforementioned cafe. As part of its ongoing efforts to curb tax evasion and plug revenue leakage, the sales tax department has been scrutinising returns based on information uploaded by the general public, establishing a collaborative exercise between the public and the department. The ‘bill layo inam pao’ scheme, an initiative introduced by the Punjab government, aims to encourage consumers to collect bills from dealers following their purchase of goods. By promoting consumer awareness of the importance of obtaining bills, the scheme has proven beneficial for the GST department, resulting in increased billing and subsequently boosting state taxes.

The first U.S. moon landing in more than 50 years appeared to be doomed after a private company’s spacecraft developed a “critical” fuel leak just hours after Monday’s launch. United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan rocket provided the lift for Astrobotic’s lander, named Peregrine, putting it on a long, roundabout path to the moon. A propulsion system problem “threatens the ability of the spacecraft to soft land on the moon,” the company said. Astrobotic’s contract with NASA for the Peregrine lander was $108 million and it has more in the pipeline. Jeff Bezos’ rocket company, Blue Origin, provided the Vulcan’s two main engines.

Mid-day market update: Sensex, Nifty decline after positive start
NSE Nifty was down by 0.62 per cent or 141.85 to 21,758.45 points, while the BSE Sensex was at 71.579.49, down by 0.64 per cent or 463.37 points. Including the investment through the primary market and others, the December FPI inflows stood at ₹66,134 crore. FPI inflows, which were negative in the 3 months before December, have sharply turned positive in December. The total FPI flows for 2023 stood at ₹1,71,106 crores (Source: NSDL). FPI inflows into debt will also see acceleration in 2024.
