Ladakh observes shutdown to press statehood and other demands
(TibetanReview.net, Feb04’24) – India’s strategically important Tibet-border Union Territory of Ladakh observed a complete shutdown on Feb 3 as thousands of its residents staged a march, demanding statehood and protections of local people’s interests under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian constitution. It was organized by Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance from the two districts which comprise the Union Territory. The two socio-political organisations spearheading the movement are pursuing four main demands: statehood for Ladakh, safeguards under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, reservation of jobs for the youth of Ladakh, and the creation of separate Parliamentary constituencies for the two parts of the region — Leh and Kargil. The people of Ladakh said they couldn’t live under an unending bureaucratic rule in the Union Territory and only a full statehood – where they elect their representatives to govern the region – could fulfil their demand, said the ndtv.com report. Ladakh was carved out as a separate Union Territory after Article 370 of the Indian constitution was scrapped and the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated and downgraded into two Union Territories in Aug 2019.

Even in contemporary times, the predominant societal mind-set dictates that women should prioritise traditional roles over pursuing impactful careers. When I got a doctorate and was a full-time employee at a university, the outlook among many was not my being an academic but my being a wife, mother, and daughter. In aspiring for change, I hope to see more Indian women breaking glass ceilings, akin to pioneers such as Indra Nooyi and Priyanka Chopra.

New Income Tax regime needs stability: CBDT chair
A standard deduction (of ₹50,000) is already granted under the new personal income tax regime. Last year, the extent of rebate has also been increased under the new personal tax regime. Taken together with the ₹50,000 standard deduction, a person with income up to ₹750,000 a year does not have to pay any tax in the new personal tax regime now. Meanwhile, the income tax department on Friday notified I-T return forms 2, 3 and 5 for filing tax returns for assessment year 2024-25. “Those who start manufacturing within this due date will be eligible for the 15% corporate tax rate.”The regime of 22% corporate tax rate without tax exemptions continues and is available to businesses, he said.

Climate crisisThe study highlights that climate transparency reports contain powerful information, which can shed light on climate (in)action of developed countries. However, are developed countries, who are responsible for over 75 per cent of historical emissions (Busch, 2015), taking deep emission reductions at an adequate pace? But surprisingly, there is little clarity on how developed countries are performing in relation to their commitments and the remaining carbon budget. In this issue brief, we aim to bridge this gap by analysing the emission trajectories of developed countries, covering historic and projected emissions in the six decades spanning 1990–2050.
