The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs chairman Sanjay Kumar Agarwal Friday said tighter norms for filing returns under the goods and services tax will reduce enforcement action and improve compliance while making the life of honest taxpayers easier. “I feel that this tightening is not actually making the life of taxpayers difficult but it is making the life of honest taxpayers easy,” Agarwal said in an interview to ET. He said there will be no need for enforcement action if return filing is tightened. He cited the example of online gaming companies, saying the amendment to GST laws to levy 28% tax on online money gaming, casinos and horse racing were earlier termed as the “death knell” for the industry, but revenues of online gaming companies and the tax payments have gone up by 400% since the amendment. “Earlier, roughly they (online gaming companies) were filing returns of 225 crore, now post amendment, monthly filing of returns has become 1,200 crore, as there is clarity for companies,” Agarwal said.

Agarwal said that the nominal GDP rate will be dictating growth in GST revenue although presently there is a tax buoyancy above 1, which indicates compliance level is going up. “So in times to come, this buoyancy in GST revenue collection will continue, but slowly, when the compliance level will be very high, then the buoyancy will not be that high. Let’s hope our GDP growth will be very robust and accordingly GST revenue collections will also happen,” said Agarwal. Tax buoyancy refers to the responsiveness of tax revenue to changes in economic activity and is a barometer of how well the tax system is able to mobilise additional revenue. Maybe, after sometime, people may switch over to electric vehicles and there may be much lesser number of petrol or driven vehicles.

US Senate foreign relations committee chairman Ben Cardin on Friday confirmed that he had delayed his approval for the India-US drone deal because of concerns about the alleged plot involving Indian officials to assassinate an American citizen on US soil. While I’m fully aware of the significance of this sale for US national security and strategic interests, I have consistently conveyed my concerns regarding the timing of this sale to administration officials in light of the alleged murder-for-hire plot involving Indian officials to attempt to assassinate an American citizen on US soil. In his statement, Cardin also made it clear that he would continue to raise human rights issues with India. “I support deepening our bilateral relationship with India as long as that partnership is based on mutual trust and respect,” he said. Progress on these issues requires difficult discussions about our own democracy, as well as discussions with our closest allies and friends.

A day after her manager shared a grief note announcing Poonam’s death, the controversial actress shared a video of her, clarifying that she staged her death only to spread awareness about cancer. The news of an influencer/model dying of cervical cancer cannot be a means to spread awareness about the disease. In numerous kitchens, food has borne the brunt, symbolized the condition of human desires, sorrows, and predicaments, and gone on to become a mesmerizing storyteller. The process of carrot halwa preparation is transformed into a narrative on poverty, dejection, powerlessness, greed, resistance, and much more. I happened to study Mahesh Dattani’s Thirty Days in September, a play on child incest and its scarred victims. In the gendered world, food and women were synonymously flung into fires of domesticity and drudgery till they simmered, boiled, and became unidentifiable masses of suffering. So may I eat the humble pie and admit that the table fare is not merely our bread and butter?

“Our aim is to increase our presence in the Lok Sabha, those who won’t succumb to the BJP’s pressure. In the incumbent Lok Sabha, the Congress has two and CPM zero representation from Bengal. Just two days back, some of the Bengal CPM leaders including Salim were with Rahul Gandhi as his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra passed through Murshidabad. Mamata would prefer a bipolar fight with the BJP, rather than a three-cornered one including the Congress and Left together. This alliance is for the Lok Sabha polls and not the Assembly.
