In an interview with indianexpress.com, Arbaaz clarified the timeline of his relationship with Giorgia, emphasizing that it had ended nearly two years before he met Shura. I was not dating anyone for almost a year and a half till I met Shura. Telecom operator Vodafone Idea (Vi) has opposed Reliance Jio ’s recommendation that the government should mandate shutting down of 2G and 3G mobile services, saying that such demands are “rhetoric in nature” and any such move will impact feature-phone users and services offered through ATMs and PoS machines.“We submit that such comments and demands are rhetoric in nature and ignore the severe impact on existing customers from a network shutdown through regulatory mandates,” Vi said in a counter response to Jio’s comments on a consultation paper for promoting 5G transformation, published by the regulator.Vodafone Idea said that any such inorganic shutdown of 2G/3G networks through a regulatory mandate would also impact financial inclusion of rural and marginal consumers.“We urge the TRAl (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) to disregard such rhetoric comments of sunset date for legacy technologies and do not recommend any regulatory mandate,” the operator said.Vi was responding to Jio’s recommendation to the telecom regulator to ensure a rapid end to 2G and 3G mobile technology to cut wasteful network-related costs and hasten the advent of a vibrant 5G ecosystem.Jio, unlike Vi and Bharti Airtel , does not offer 2G/3G networks, and has already completed pan-India 5G rollout, to go with its 4G services. In India, 2G networks serve some 250 million feature phone users. However, both Jio and Vi agreed that the government should tap unused cash in the Universal Services Obligation Fund (USOF) corpus to finance a handset subsidy scheme that could encourage millions of 2G users to also upgrade to 4G/5G services quickly. Currently, about Rs 77,113 crore remains unused under the USOF corpus. As for 3G networks , Vi said they are being shut down gradually across different circles, and the market itself is deciding the optimum course and timeline for it. Airtel had shut down 3G about four years ago.As per Vi’s recent earnings call, it has shut down 3G services in five circles--Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Mumbai and Kolkata--and is aiming to launch 5G services in the next six-seven months.Vi said “mass enterprise deployments and loT devices like smart metering, ATMs, PoS devices, etc., rely on 2G networks. Replacing such devices with 4G/5G capability is a mammoth task.”(You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel
