India heatwave: Warning issued for four states as heat curbs outdoor play for children - India
DELHI, 12 June 2024 – India’s heatwave shows no sign of abating as the country’s meteorological department warned of extreme heat in four out of 28 states on Wednesday, Save the Children said. On 11 June the Day of Play was added to the list of global annual observances recognised by the United Nations, highlighting play as a critical developmental activity for children. Children face significant health and developmental risks, including dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke, with prolonged exposure to such high temperatures putting children at risk of long team heath issues. Sudarshan Suchi, CEO of Bal Raksha Bharat [Save the Children in India] said:“Play is crucial for children’s well-being and for their learning and development, but children in India cannot play outdoors during extreme heat events because this puts their mental and physical wellbeing at risk. PM Modi’s approval rating dips slightly to 70% in May 2024: Report
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s approval rating stood at 70 per cent in May this year, a recent report by Ipsos IndiaBus said on Tuesday. This shows a slight dip from the PM’s earlier rating of 75% in February, according to the findings by the Ipsos survey. AdvertisementAccording to Ipsos, PM Modi’s approval rating was relatively lower for metros (53 per cent), self employed (43 per cent) and south zone (31 per cent). As many as 52 per cent people even disapproved of him in the south zone, the report said. Discussing the hits and misses of the Modi government, the survey report said education system, sanitation and cleanliness, and healthcare emerged the top performance areas.

12 per cent hike in Schengen visa fee comes into effect
From Tuesday onwards, the cost of a short-stay Schengen visa has increased by 12 per cent. While the Schengen visa fee for adults has increased to 90 euros from 80 euros, children between the age of 6 and 12 will now pay 45 euros instead of 40 euros. Schengen visa allows the holder to travel freely in the Schengen Area comprising 29 European countries, for short stays of a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period. Schengen countries account for around 20 per cent of India’s outbound traffic, as per estimates. The EU visa costs were reviewed in December 2023, as Schengen Visa Code mandates review every three years.

Sarod maestro Rajeev Taranath passes away
MYSURU: Pandit Rajeev Taranath, the renowned sarod maestro, passed away due to age-related illness at the age of 92 in Mysuru on Tuesday. Taranath, a luminary in the realm of Hindustani classical music, breathed his last at a private hospital where he had been receiving treatment for the past several days. A distinguished disciple of the great sarod maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Taranath also received guidance from Pandit Ravi Shankar and Srimati Annapurna Devi. His body will be kept for public viewing at his residence in Kuvempunagar from 9:30 am to 11 am on June 12. The funeral will be held in Mysuru at the foothills of the Chamundi Hills later in the afternoon.

CPM expels Jose K Mani’s critic in Pala from party
KOTTAYAM : An attempt to resolve internal tensions within the LDF in Pala municipality has resulted in the expulsion of Binu Pulikkakandam, the CPM municipal councillor in Pala, from the party. The decision was announced by P M Joseph, the secretary of the CPM area committee in Pala, on Tuesday. The expulsion was attributed to a breach of party discipline and the councillor’s anti-left stance. Binu, known for his outspoken criticism of the Kerala Congress (M) and its chairman Jose K Mani, has been embroiled in a public feud with Jose since he was denied the opportunity to become the chairman of Pala municipality in January 2023. Despite being the sole councillor to win under the party symbol, Binu alleges that Jose’s interference led to his exclusion.
