Cars could get costlier as automobile emission norms set to tighten
Indian automakers must reduce carbon emissions by one-third in three years or face penalties under the third phase of the corporate average fuel efficiency (CAFE) standards set by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), the Economic Times (ET) reported. The proposal by India’s energy efficiency and conservation agency is expected to add to the 30 per cent price hike since Bharat Stage VI (BS VI) emission norms were implemented in April 2020. Automakers expressed concerns that a shorter transition period for CAFE-IV norms would affect product planning, development, and investment cycles. The CAFE norms apply to a manufacturer’s entire vehicle output, limiting carbon emissions from all vehicles sold in a financial year. This adjustment aims to provide automakers with more flexibility and time to develop and integrate new technologies to meet these targets.

MP Azim was smothered with pillow in Kolkata: West Bengal CID
The West Bengal CID on Wednesday revealed fresh, chilling details in the murder case of Bangladeshi MP Anwarul Azim Anar. According to the investigators, the MP, who was confirmed to have been murdered last month, was smothered with a pillow soon after he entered a flat in New Town in Kolkata, reports hindustantimes.com. On May 22, the Dhaka and West Bengal officials confirmed that he was murdered. Following this, the Dhaka police and West Bengal CID launched an investigation, and five people, including three in Dhaka, were arrested. Notably, Akhtaruzzaman has a flat in Kolkata, however, he is likely to be living in the US at present.

Kuwait fire tragedy: We hoped against hope, says Arun’s family
Arun, a shop admin-cum-purchaser with the NBTC group, had arrived for his second stint in Kuwait just eight months back. Prior to the pandemic, Arun had worked in Kuwait for eight years. Son of the late Babu Madhavan Pillai and Ajitha Kumari, Arun worked as a labourer on his return to Thiruvananthapuram. But within a gap of five hours, the dreaded news arrived, pushing the family into deep shock. Arun is also survived by wife Vineetha P Vijay, a homemaker, and two daughters, ninth-grader Ashtami and three-year-old Ameya.

Cracks in NDA come out wide open in Bihar
PATNA: Internal conflict within ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Bihar has come to the fore with results of the Lok Sabha elections announced and formation of BJP-led coalition government at the centre. BJP, a major ally of NDA, could win only 12 out of 17 seats it contested in the election. Its ally--Janata Dal (United), which contested 16 seats, however, emerged victorious on equal number of seats that BJP won in the election. Two other allies — LJP (RV) won five seats and HAM one seat, respectively. But the equation changed in the 2024 election and ‘INDIA’ fielded candidates from Kushwaha community on some key constituencies.
