KOCHI : The Tibet issue was back in the headlines after the US Congress passed a bill that supports the Tibetan cause. The bipartisan bill, passed by the Congress early this month, is now on US President Joe Biden’s table awaiting his signature to ratify it into law. What’s in the billThe Promoting a Resolution to the Tibet-China Dispute Act, also known as the Resolve Tibet Act, is the third such piece of legislation on Tibet passed by the US Congress after the Tibetan Policy Act (TPA) of 2002, and the Tibetan Policy & Support Act (TPSA) of 2020. It unambiguously questions China’s territorial claims over Tibet and seeks to redress the region’s unresolved status. Recognising the historical geography of Tibet is the most notable feature of the new bill as it precisely identifies the Chinese designs to disfigure the historical Tibet and seeks to highlight that by referring to the original geography of the region.

Well, the NDA is back in power, Narendra Modi duly sworn-in as India’s prime minister, for the third time. ADVERTISEMENTAnd this is where not the NDA but the Indian voter has won. As it played out, independent India’s first election was just about less-than-half an election, for less than half the number of eligible voters voted. Which meant that a little over half of those who did vote did not vote for the Congress or for Nehru. Five, the Two-Nation Theory continues to be rejected by the Indian voter.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully demonstrated the landing of the Pushpak reusable launch vehicle for the third time on Sunday, bringing it one step closer to using the vehicle for an orbital mission. ISRO achieved its third and final consecutive success in the Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV) Landing EXperiment (LEX) on June 23, 2024. To bring down launch costs and to remain competitive, the reusable launch vehicle is designed to take satellites up to space and return and land on a runway like an aeroplane. “This mission simulated the approach and landing interface and high-speed landing conditions for a vehicle returning from space, reaffirming ISRO’s expertise in acquiring the most critical technologies required for the development of a Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV),” the space agency said. Sunday’s demonstration validated one of the critical technologies needed for the reusable launch vehicle—an advanced algorithm for correcting longitudinal and lateral plane errors.

A study conducted by the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bengaluru, has unravelled the electronic mechanisms governing chemical bonding of a new class of materials called ‘incipient metals’, which can boost energy harvesting and power generation. Recently, scientists are turning to a class of compounds called group IV chalcogenides that have intriguing properties, making them suitable candidates for technological applications. Chalcogenides can transition reversibly between amorphous and crystalline phases in response to changes in temperature, pressure, or electrical fields. Additionally, the potential use of these materials in energy storage, especially as phase change materials, opens avenues for more sustainable and efficient energy solutions. Furthermore, the research connects with the emerging field of quantum materials, aligning with the goals of India’s national mission on quantum technology.

The BJP on Sunday launched a scathing on strongly condemned the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government over the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy that claimed the life of over 53 people. Speaking to the media, party MP Sambit Patra said, "Today we are here to discuss news from Tamil Nadu, it is about a hooch tragedy, illicit liquor from Kallakurchi, a district of Tamil Nadu...When I came to hold this press conference and was checking the figures, the number of dead was 56. More than 56 people have died and many of them are critical, still about 200 people are admitted to the hospital. This is such an important issue and I am surprised that Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, DMK and all the people of the INDIA alliance are silent on this issue. If more than 32 Dalits are killed in this country, I would call it a murder, this is not death."

When it comes to flights for the former, the Soviet Soyuz spacecraft was the historical vessel of choice. All these factors make Starliner interesting for sure, but what makes it truly revolutionary is what it represents for the future of private spaceflight. With private spaceflight already a reality, the scope of these flights and their reach may now have just been heavily expanded. SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy, for example, had an estimated R&D cost of $500 million. With India’s forthcoming Gaganyaan mission aiming to achieve the similar goal of crewed spaceflight, it would be wise to take note of the reactions of countries to Starliner’s launch.
