If disastrous railway accidents fail to awaken the conscience of the Ministry, what else will?
There has been a continuing neglect in filling up posts relating to safety and monitoring, which has weakened the traditional monitoring systems of the Railways. For example, a year after the devastating Balasore train accident, two goods trains collided near Madhopur in Sirhind, Punjab, injuring two locomotive pilots. As I mentioned in my earlier letters, many “near-miss accidents” due to systemic failures in the Railways go unreported, the public unaware of the potential risk to their lives. Good governance implies owning responsibility for governance failures at the highest level and subjecting oneself to public accountability, more than anyone else. I sincerely hope that the Railway Ministry is not waiting for yet another disastrous accident to awaken its conscience!!!

80-year-old killed in Salem apartment fire
SALEM: An 80-year-old woman died in a devastating fire that broke out early Monday morning in an apartment complex in the Hasthampatti area of Salem. Eight two-wheelers parked on the ground floor of the building were gutted. The fire originated in the property owned by one Abdul Rahman, a resident of Maravaneri, near Hasthampatti. However she died despite being rushed to Salem Government Medical College Hospital for intensive treatment. We are further investigating the cause of the fire," the Hasthampatti police told TNIE.

Nvidia correction erases $400 billion in market cap
Nvidia Corp. shares fell on Monday, with the AI-focused chipmaker entering correction territory as it extends a sharp recent selloff. It has dropped 12% over the three-day slide, putting it past the 10% threshold that represents a correction. The drop weighed on chipmakers with the Philadelphia Stock Exchange Semiconductor Index falling as much as 2.2% on Monday. The three-day drop erased more than $400 billion from Nvidia’s market capitalization, putting it back below the $3 trillion threshold, as well as below both Microsoft Corp. and Apple Inc. in size. “The momentum in Nvidia and AI stocks in general has been staggering,” said Charlie Ashley, portfolio manager at Catalyst Funds.
