The Global Partnership for Ethiopia has secured financing from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) for its ongoing telecommunications project in the African country. The investment is set to facilitate the construction of the first private Ethiopian telecommunications system, including 4G and 5G mobile networks built by Global Partnership’s wholly owned subsidiary, Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia Private Limited Company. MIGA also provided USD one billion in 10-year guarantees to protect equity investments by Safaricom Ethiopia shareholders.

Transport and business activities resumed in Finote Selam and Dembecha towns (Pictures: Finote Selam and Dembecha communication offices/Facebook)Addis Abeba – Three fatalities and multiple injuries have been reported in the West Gojjam Zone, following civil unrest since Sunday in the towns of Denbecha, Jiga and Finote Selam, Zemenu Tadele, the Head of the Zone’s Communication Office, confirmed to Addis Standard. This escalation resulted in substantial property damage, including the destruction of a hotel thought to be sheltering a police officer, according to the resident. As of Tuesday, the Department of Government Communication Affairs of the West Gojjam Zone has announced that calm has been restored in Denbecha, Jiga and Fenote Selam. Communications offices of Finote Selam and Dembecha have also shared pictures on Facebook on claiming that the towns have returned to normal operations. The protests happened amidst calls most notably from members of the National Movement of Amhara (NaMA) of deployment of the national defense forces out of the Amhara region.

June 14, (THEWILL) – The Ethiopian Government, on Monday, appointed the Commander of the country’s Air Force, Lieutenant General Yilma Merdassa, as the new chairperson of Ethiopian Airlines Board of Directors. Nigeria’s Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Aviation have both labelled the launch of Nigeria Air as a fraud. A statement issued by Ethiopian Airlines reads: “Ethiopian Airlines Group would like to inform its stakeholders that Lieutenant General Yilma Merdassa, the Commander of Ethiopian Air Force, has been appointed by the Ethiopian Government as Chairperson of Ethiopian Airlines Management Board effective June 8, 2023, succeeding Mr. Girma Wake. “Ethiopian Airlines Group welcomes Lieutenant General Yilma Merdassa and wishes him success in his new role. “Ethiopian Airlines executive management shall continue working closely with the Management Board to implement Vision 2035 and take the airline to the next level.”

As we look to the future, the coffee production industry is poised to confront even greater challenges, particularly in the face of an increasingly harsh climate. It is important to acknowledge that collaborating with powerful players in the coffee industry is not easy, and simply restricting access to coffee genetic resources is not a viable solution. Therefore, a mega coffee project can leverage the recent experience gained in designing, planning, and executing these large-scale initiatives. Furthermore, the national organization leading the megaproject should establish regional and international collaborations with specialized institutions across the coffee value chain stages.

Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) is to construct a substation and transmission line in two regions of Ethiopia as part of its electricity expansion plans. The Tourism Seychelles China office successfully completed the first trade workshops with leading agents from Beijing, Tianjin, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Suzhou, and Hangzhou. A look at the AusTender website, where federal government contracts are listed, details 128 contracts between Australian government agencies and the Israeli company since 2011. The hacking technology was allegedly used against a woman receiving single parent payments to determine if she had been in a relationship at the time. Cellebrite is another Israeli company that works with repressive states and yet it has received far less criticism. This includes the Universal Forensic Extraction Device (UFED) hacking tool, which allows the extraction of information from mobile phones.

About $1.15 billion has been secured from 110,000 tons of coffee export during the 11 months period, per the Authority. Ethiopia, for the first time in its history, exported 300,000 metric tons of coffee valued at $1.4 billion to the global market last year. The achievement was made when the price of Arabica coffee in the global market enjoyed well above $2 per pound for most of 2022. According to the ECTA, the share of the specialty coffee in Ethiopia’s export so far this year is 70 percent. “We are offering coffee that can withstand the price volatility of global coffee,” Adugna said.

Kampala, June 13 : Uganda has repatriated 17 Ethiopian girls rescued from human trafficking in the capital Kampala, an immigration spokesperson said here on Monday. Ugandan officials handed over the girls to Ethiopian immigration officers at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, Simon Mundeyi, and spokesperson for ministry of internal affairs of Uganda, told reporters. “They were removed from the country legally and were accompanied by our immigration officers. Human Trafficking is a transnational crime that we invite everyone to fight,” Mundeyi said at the weekly security press briefing. Ugandan officials rescued more than 40 Burundian girls and arrested five suspects involved in human trafficking in the country in April, 2021.

The Chairman of Ethiopian Airlines, Girma Wake, has resigned. The 79-year-old veteran of the African airline industry, who joined the company in 1965 and served as its Chief Executive Officer from 2004-2011, resigned amidst controversy surrounding the establishment of Nigeria’s national carrier, Nigeria Air. The reason for his resignation remains unknown, however, Lieutenant General Yilma Merdassa was immediately appointed the head of the country’s air force. Commander of Ethiopia’s air force, Yilma was said to have served on the company’s board of directors “for the last two and half years,” before assuming his new role on June 8. Nigeria’s Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Aviation have both labelled the launch of the Nigeria Air as a fraud.
