Russia rained missiles down on Kyiv hours after African leaders arrived for a peacekeeping mission on June 16. Six hypersonic Kinzahl missiles, six Kalibr cruise missiles and two drones were shot down. “Putin 'builds confidence' by launching the largest missile attack on Kyiv in weeks, exactly amid the visit of African leaders to our capital. Russian missiles are a message to Africa: Russia wants more war, not peace,” Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba tweeted in response to the strikes. The African leaders may also propose an “unconditional grain and fertiliser deal”.

Tigray aid embezzlement: authorities identify 186 suspects
Investigations ordered by the interim regional authorities in Tigray into the diversion of food aid in this region of Ethiopia have identified 186 suspects, members of government and humanitarian bodies, according to the head of the commission of inquiry. On 3 May, USAID, the US government's humanitarian agency, and the UN World Food Program (WFP) announced the indefinite suspension of their food aid to Tigray because of the misappropriations. Both then extended this decision to the whole of Ethiopia on 8 June, with USAID referring to a "widespread and coordinated" diversion of food aid across the country. "Seven of the 186 suspects have already been incarcerated", said General Fiseha, without specifying which entities the identified suspects belong to. The Ethiopian army, as well as forces from neighboring Ethiopian regions, intervened militarily in Tigray to support the Ethiopian federal army.

Eritrea was sanctioned by the United States in 2021 after sending troops into Ethiopia’s Tigray region in support of Ethiopian forces and has been accused of massacring hundreds of civilians. Seven of the 186 suspects are already in custody, Kidanu added in an interview conducted on Wednesday and broadcast on Thursday. Last week Ethiopia’s government said in a joint statement with USAID that it was committed to addressing the “deeply concerning revelations of food aid diversion”.

Two seafarers injured as Beks capesize bulker hit by fire off Russia
Two crew members have been injured on a Turkish bulker that caught fire off Russia on Friday morning. The 177,000-dwt capesize Beks Force (built 2005) suffered a blaze in its engine room south of Nakhokda. Istanbul-based manager Beks Shipmanagement & Trading told TradeWinds that the two injured seafarers were taken off the ship to hospital. “All necessary actions taken by our crew members and fire extinguished successfully,” it added. The Marshall Islands-flagged Beks Force left Luoyuan in China on 10 June and was heading to Vostochny in Russia.

Castor Maritime flips kamsarmax bulker for quick $4m profit

Polembros grabs early suezmax slots at New Times Shipbuilding in China
Greece’s Polembros Shipping has inked its debut contracts with New Times Shipbuilding. The Chinese yard will construct two suezmax tankers for the Greek shipowner, with very early delivery dates in April and May 2025, Polembros managing director George Vakirtzis confirmed. The vessels will be LNG-ready and will be equipped with scrubbers. Spiros Polemis-controlled Polembros, an owner of both tankers and bulkers, once preferred Japanese and South Korean yards for its crude carriers.
