Ethiopian Delegation Meets with WTO Officials to Discuss Accession
A delegation from Ethiopia met with WTO officials in Geneva on July 26th to discuss the resumption of negotiations for Ethiopia's accession to the WTO. The delegation, led by Minister of Trade and Regional Integration Gebremeskel Chala, met with WTO Deputy Director-General Mr. ZHANG Xiangchen and Ms. Rebecca Fisher-Lamb, the Chairperson of the Working Party on the Accession of Ethiopia. The discussions focused on the current status of Ethiopia's accession process and future actions that could be taken. Ethiopia's Working Party was established on 10 February 2003. The Working Party, which is chaired by Ms. Rebecca Fisher Lamb, met for the fourth time in January 2020.

Putin promises free grain at Africa summit
MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday offered free grain to six poor African countries as he launched a summit with leaders from the continent days after withdrawing from the Ukraine grain export deal. In a keynote address at the summit, Putin promised to send grain to six African countries. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken pressed African leaders attending the summit to demand answers about the grain disruptions that have propelled poorer nations towards crisis. Seventeen African leaders including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa are expected at the Russia-Africa summit taking place on Thursday and Friday. The summit in Saint Petersburg comes a month ahead of a summit of leaders of the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) due to take place in Johannesburg.

European Central Bank raises interest rates to 3.75%
The European Central Bank raised interest rates on Thursday to 3.75 per cent – following the lead of the US Federal Reserve – in its battle against inflation. Weaker domestic demand and high inflation are dampening supply and weighing on manufacturing. “High inflation and tighter financing conditions are dampening spending. So we might hike and we might hold.”Ms Lagarde said that if the bank pauses interest rate increases, “it would not necessarily be for an extended period of time”. Fed chairman Jerome Powell was equivocal about whether there was one more policy rate rise left this year and said the banking regulator's staff were no longer forecasting a recession.

Addis Ababa dangles Ethiopian stake to Eritrea - report
Ethiopian Airlines was not immediately available for comment. Abiy reportedly made the remarks in a meeting with investors and business people in Addis Ababa recently, but this could not be verified independently. According to Amba, the prime minister said the Ethiopian government was exploring all options to secure a port for the country through negotiations with Eritrea, Djibouti, and Somaliland. "In the case of Eritrea, the government has proposed to give 30% of Ethiopian Airlines to the Eritrean government in exchange for port access [presumably Massawa]," the report said. Abiy also said the government would consider using force to secure a port, but this would be a last resort.

News: Insecurity, reduced access to inputs cause alarming low plantation rate in Ethiopia’s Meher dependent areas

Photo: AMCAddis Abeba – A new report by the UNOCHA revealed that insecurity, including violence, flooding and reduced access to agricultural inputs in parts of Ethiopia that are dependent on the Meher, the February-to-May rainy season, resulted in alarming low plantation rates. “Factors to the low plantations were reportedly ascribable to insecurity and violence in some areas, such as portions of Oromia and Amhara, reduced access to inputs and levels of planting, while flooding in some areas, such as areas of SNNP, Oromia, and Somali regions, disrupted crop growth,” the report said. The assessment is expected to be completed in the coming weeks and will be followed by an analysis of the results to inform the humanitarian response. This assessment will inform the mid-year review of the Humanitarian Response Plan.

Morocco: nearly 50 suspected supporters of jihadist groups arrested
Around 50 people were arrested on Wednesday across Morocco during a major anti-terrorist raid targeting suspected supporters of jihadist groups, local media said, citing security sources. Among them, 21 were placed in police custody under the supervision of the prosecution, said the same sources. The suspects are believed to have "sworn allegiance" to the Islamic State (IS) and Al Qaeda jihadist groups. According to these security sources, searches led to "seizure of bladed weapons", and "publications advocating terrorism and documents relating to methods of manufacturing explosives". If Morocco has been spared in recent years by attacks linked to jihadist groups, its security services regularly report anti-jihadist crackdowns and foiled attack plans.
