A source close to the issue informed Addis Standard, that the government is currently seeking comparable financial assistance from the IMF and the World Bank to that provided three years ago. A few months ago, the central bank made an offer to provide five banking licenses to foreign investors over the course of five years. The conclusion of the discussion with 27 donor organizations under the DAG banner is encouraging for Ethiopia, which is currently facing a chronic shortage of foreign currency. Following the request of the Ethiopian government, the Bretton Woods Institutions expressed their willingness to provide financial assistance subject to certain conditions. Recently, Julie Kozack, director of communications at the IMF, said that discussions are ongoing on economic policies and reforms that could potentially be supported under an IMF program.

“We often go to sleep without food.”In interviews with The Associated Press, which first reported the massive theft of food aid, officials with U.S. and U.N. aid agencies, humanitarian organizations and diplomats offered new findings on the countrywide diversion of aid to military units and markets. That included allegations that some senior Ethiopian officials were extensively involved. At a private meeting last week in Ethiopia, U.S. aid officials told international partners that this could be the largest-ever diversion of food aid in any country, aid workers said. In an interview with the AP, a senior official with the U.S. Agency for International Development said the exact amount of food aid stolen may never be known. With USAID giving Ethiopia’s government $1.8 billion in humanitarian assistance since 2022, a delay in providing food aid causes widespread pain.

At a private meeting last week in Ethiopia, U.S. aid officials told international partners that this could be the largest-ever diversion of food aid in any country, aid workers said. With USAID giving Ethiopia’s government $1.8 billion in humanitarian assistance since 2022, a delay in providing food aid causes widespread pain. There were also signs that people whom the USAID official described only as “market actors” were forcing hungry families to surrender food aid they received — something that WFP suspects as well. For USAID’s part, the senior agency official cited a range of reasons that U.S. officials missed the extent of the aid theft for so long. Some Republican and Democratic lawmakers said the rare countrywide suspension of aid showed USAID is taking the theft of U.S. aid with appropriate seriousness.

“The low allocation of USD to the aviation industry by the Ethiopian Government and Central Bank means that $95 million in airline funds are blocked in the country. Transferring funds remains a critical challenge for airlines,” said Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO, Mr. Mesfin Tasew. Additional key priorities to support a strong aviation sector in Ethiopia include:Implementing the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM): SAATM was the solution to unlocking travel within the African continent pre-pandemic. Fostering the growth of a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) industry: SAF will play the most significant role in reducing the aviation industry's carbon footprint, aligning with the industry's commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Ethiopia’s aviation industry is set to triple by 2040, with an average 6% growth in passenger traffic over the next 17 years.

Clark County creates Little Ethiopia cultural districtThe Clark County Commission today established its first cultural district, with a 6-0 vote creating a Little Ethiopia district. Efforts to create the district began in August 2019, when members of Southern Nevada’s Ethiopian community requested an official neighborhood designation. The commission in response developed the cultural district designation policy, which provides guidance on such districts to strengthen areas representing unique cultural heritages. Earlier this year, the Ethiopian community drafted an updated application for the neighborhood designation and presented it to the Spring Valley and Paradise town advisory boards.
