Gizachew Muluneh, Amhara region communications bureau head (Photo: DW)Addis Abeba – The Amhara regional state government has said efforts are being made to resolve long standing identity and boundary disputes with neighboring Tigray region through a referendum in a bid to establish lasting peace. According to Gizachew, the attempt to resolve the outstanding identity and border issues through a referendum is part of the regional government’s effort to pacify the region that has not yet relieved the distress caused by the war. Addressing the parliament on Thursday, PM Abiy Ahmed advised the two regions to consult and resolve the dispute in a peaceful manner. Authorities in Tigray have been asking the federal government to enforce the withdrawal of the Amhara forces from the Tigray regional state territories on the account of the Pretoria peace deal which states for disputed areas to be resolved constitutionally. Rights groups have been accusing security forces and the local administration assigned by the Amhara region particularly in Western Tigray of committing ethnic cleansing against Tigrayans.

MSF said more than 20 million people relied on food assistance in Ethiopia and warned that malnutrition rates were high. Image by flickr.comDoctors Without Borders (MSF) on Friday 7 July 2023 called for the immediate resumption of food aid to Ethiopia, warning that a decision to suspend assistance comes amid “alarmingly high” rates of malnutrition. The UN’s World Food Programme and USAID suspended food aid to Africa’s second most populous nation in June, citing the widespread diversion of supplies from those in need. It said the “temporary pause for food aid in Tigray (is) negatively impacting already high malnutrition rates” and warned vulnerable people were at greater risk of suffering because of the suspension. Ethiopia’s government criticised the suspension of food aid and promised to investigate, with USAID, claims that assistance was diverted.

The Prime Minister claimed that this year alone some 180 new manufacturing outlets were established. Somehow, he tried to make Ethiopia look better by comparing her with the worst countries in the group of 10 worst countries. The most absurd claim is the decrease in imports that the Prime Minister touted as a sign of his policy’s success. Another area the Prime Minister peddled as success was the drop in debt to GDP ratio. The Prime Minister claimed he donated 3 billion Birr to regional governments from his last book sales.
