Human rights activist, Deji Adeyanju has explained why the President Bola Tinubu-led administration should consider a Nigerian airline as the country’s national carrier. “Before going into the economic implications, I would like to draw your attention, sir, to the choice of Ethiopian Airlines as the majority shareholder of Nigeria Air. Yet, the Buhari government found the airline unworthy of being transformed into a National Airline. “The first step in restructuring our aviation sector is to appoint an aviation technocrat and not a politician as minister of aviation for our republic. I also implore you, your excellency, to immediately reverse the dubious partnership initiated with the Ethiopian airline.”

Addis Ababa: An eastern African bloc called on Monday for a regional summit to consider deploying troops into Sudan to protect civilians, after nearly three months of violence between the army and a paramilitary faction. Diplomatic efforts to halt fighting between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have so far proved ineffective, with competing initiatives creating confusion over how the warring parties might be brought to negotiate. IGAD said it regretted the absence of a delegation from the Sudan army, which it said had earlier confirmed attendance. The Kenyan government said last month the president was a neutral arbiter who was duly appointed by the IGAD summit. Egypt has said it would host a separate summit of Sudan’s neighbours on July 13 to discuss ways to end the conflict.

In Paris, Montenegro introduced the question, “Why not taste coffee like we taste wines?”When Montenegro first opened La Caféothèque, her French clients loved the coffee but weren’t accustomed to the complexity of flavors. It’s a big sin to burn coffee.”Appreciating the amount of work required in coffee production and wanting to highlight countries of origin, La Caféothèque doesn’t sell any blends. She now estimates that the program has trained more than 800 baristas and roasters, whom she calls “Caféothèques.”Despite the prolonged success at La Caféothèque, Montenegro still spends her days cupping coffee to ensure quality, while continuing to train future coffee professionals. “The French are very gifted for taste, and they have the vocabulary of taste,” said Montenegro. It’s fantastic to hear them everyday.”Here’s more from DCN’s recent conversation with Parisian coffee legend Gloria Montenegro.

The report questions whether the deal has essentially resolved the Tigray war. “Other conflict parties must be brought in and held to commitments, including but not limited to Amhara, Afar and the Eritrean government and forces. It further made a the point on how women were absent from the official delegations of the parties to the peace talks. ”Despite its successes in silencing the guns in Tigray, the CoHA represents the floor, rather than the ceiling of what can be achieved for Ethiopians. The scope of future agreements must be enlarged, if lasting peace is to be achieved across the country,” the 26-page report underlined.

Egypt and Ethiopia are set to resume negotiations on the disputed Nile dam being built by Addis Ababa –which Cairo sees as a threat to its vital share of the river's water – sources told The National on Monday. Ethiopia and downstream nations Egypt and Sudan last held talks over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (Gerd) in April 2021 in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Both Egypt and Sudan want Ethiopia to enter a legally binding agreement on the operation of the $5 billion dam, built on the Blue Nile – the river's main tributary – about 20km from the border with Sudan. It has also sought to reassure Egypt and Sudan that no harm would come to them as a result of the dam. For its part, Egypt, one of the world's driest nations, has spent billions of pounds in recent years on projects to conserve Nile waters.

Air links between Libya and Italy will resume in the fall after an interruption of nearly a decade, the head of the Libyan government, based in Tripoli and recognized by the UN, announced on Sunday. "The Italian government has informed us of its decision to lift the air embargo imposed on Libyan civil aviation for ten years," Abdelhamid Dbeibah announced on Twitter on Sunday. Mr Dbeibah did not specify whether or not the Libyan carriers would be removed from this list before the planned resumption of air links with Italy. With the resumption of flights in September, Italy will be the second European country after Malta to have a direct air link with Libya. Since then, European countries have interrupted their links with Libya, prohibited the landing of Libyan planes and closed their airspace to Libyan companies, for security reasons.
