Racism was the most common form of discrimination, accounting for just under half (49.3 per cent) of all reports, while reports related to sexism and misogyny represented the largest rise in a specific discrimination type. Figures show a 400 per cent increase in reports of sexism and misogyny, up from 16 to 80. A statement from Kick It Out referred to the rise in reports as a “significant leap” that “highlights that discrimination is still a serious issue within the game”. Social media abuse comprised a much larger proportion of overall reports compared to previous years, making up 28 per cent of all reports received, up from 12.1 per cent last year. “Behind each of these statistics is somebody who has sadly experienced discrimination, and supporting the victims of abuse remains Kick It Out’s utmost priority.

An estimated 10,000 people gathered outside the main hall, blowing horns and waving blue and white Israeli flags. Mass protests have taken place since Netanyahu’s far-right government presented the overhaul plan in January, days after taking office. Netanyahu’s allies have proposed a series of changes to the Israeli legal system aimed at weakening what they say are the excessive powers of unelected judges. The proposed changes include giving Netanyahu’s allies control over the appointment of judges and giving parliament power to overturn court decisions. They also say Netanyahu has a conflict of interest because he is on trial for charges of fraud, breach of trust and accepting bribes.

Conductor Tom Cohen never misses a chance to collaborate with friends and musical colleagues. This week, it’s “Tezeta” (“Nostalgia” in Amharit), a concert that melded the sounds of jazz and pop from Ethiopian music, with Ester Rada and Gili Yalo, two of Israel’s well-known singers, along with Cohen and his Jerusalem Orchestra East West. It’s an idea that’s been batted around for a long time, said Cohen, but never found the right moment, audience or location. Most of the concert was sung in Amharic, with Rada and Yalo as the soulful representatives of Ethiopian music in Israel. “Ester and Gili are familiar names but the audience doesn’t know what they’re going to hear, until they hear it.”

The German government condemned on Monday the violent clashes occurred during the weekend at a controversial Eritrean music festival held in the town of Giessen, north of Frankfurt. Opponents of the festival accuse the organisers of being close to the authoritarian regime in Eritrea, and of using the event, which has been running since 2011, as "propaganda" for the ruling power. Local elected representatives called on Olaf Scholz's government to summon Eritrean representatives to the country. Eritrea officially became a state in May 1993, two years after throwing off Ethiopian domination. Since then, the country has been ruled by independence hero Issaias Afeworki, who has established a one-party regime without elections, where any opposition is severely repressed.
