Her doctor says she is dying, a new victim of an acute food shortage in a region blighted by two years of war and struggling with drought. In late June, a Reuters team made their first trip in two years to Tigray, the epicentre of the conflict. Aid flows to Tigray resumed after the November ceasefire but were temporarily halted earlier this year. By Dawit EndeshawADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - An eastern African bloc called on Monday for a regional summit to consider deploying troops into Sudan to protect civilians, after nearly three months of violence between the army and a paramilitary faction. IGAD said it regretted the absence of a delegation from the Sudan army, which it said had earlier confirmed attendance. The Kenyan government said last month the president was a neutral arbiter who was duly appointed by the IGAD summit. Egypt has said it would host a separate summit of Sudan's neighbours on July 13 to discuss ways to end the conflict. IGAD said that along with the African Union, it would immediately start a "civilian engagement process" aimed at delivering peace.

A Boeing 737 MaxBritish victims of an airline crash in Ethiopia where all 157 passengers and crew on board died were “unlawfully killed”, a coroner has concluded. The finding comes four years after Ethiopian Airlines ET302 crashed en route from Addis Ababa to Nairobi on March 10 2019, killing humanitarian workers Samuel Pegram, 25, Oliver Vick, 45, and sustainability campaigner Joanna Toole, 36, among others. Senior coroner Penelope Schofield also found that a contributing factor in the victims’ deaths was that Boeing had failed to provide procedures to operate the system in a flight crew manual, and that information requested by Ethiopian Airlines’ training department was “incomplete”. The Ethiopian Airlines crash followed just months after another Boeing 737 Max plane, operated by Lion Air Max, crashed in Indonesia killing all 189 people on board. Ms Schofield paid tribute to the “impressive lives” of the British victims of the Ethiopian Airlines crash and to all the 157 passengers and crew killed, many of whom she noted were environmentalists and humanitarians.

“It was possible to express ideas through dialogue,” His Holiness said, and “it would have been important’ to explain the damages sustained. “I think the committee and the archbishops who are with us here understood the suffering that befell Tigray,” he said. But unlike widespread expectations, the Patriarch revealed that the delegation “did not meet with the Holy Fathers” from the region. Other than suggesting the need for dialogue, the regional government has no standing to intervene in the matter, Getachew said. Since then, the Archbishops in Tigray have announced their decision to, cut ties with the EOTC Holy Synod in Addis Abeba.
