This follows the injunction issued by the High Court in Lilongwe in a matter between MultiChoice Malawi (MCM) and the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) prohibiting an adjustment to the DStv tariffs. “MCM does not offer the DStv service to the public and therefore cannot set or adjust tariffs for this service, a point repeatedly made to MACRA. “Customers are hereby, and with immediate effect, requested to halt payment for the DStv service. Customers who have already paid their new subscription for the DStv service will have those services honored until the current 30 day viewing cycle ends on or before 10 September 2023.

The Ethiopian Parliament will hold an emergency meeting next Monday August 14, 2023 after Tagesse Chaffo, the speaker, called members from recess today to approve the state of emergency declared in the restive Amhara region last week. Last week, the Council of Ministers approved a state of emergency in Amhara citing instability and armed violence in the region. The decree was made effective immediately after the Council’s approval but still needs parliament’s endorsement within two weeks to remain active. Nearly five months after suspending food aid in Ethiopia because of a massive scheme to steal donated grain, the United Nations World Food Program has begun testing small distribution programs in some areas of Ethiopia. As the World Food Program begins food deliveries to approximately 100,000 people out of 20 million impacted by the suspension, The Associated Press reports that officials have added new security measures. Save the Children called on Wednesday for access for humanitarian aid to continue in Ethiopia’s Amhara region where a state of emergency has been declared after a renewal in violence. Also on Wednesday, Reuters reported that Ethiopian National Defence Forces (ENDF) have pushed back Amhara fighters known as Fano out of two major towns in the Amhara region in its first major battlefield breakthrough since fighting erupted last week. We must shield vulnerable children from violence, displacement, hunger, and abuse and it is imperative that vulnerable families are granted safety and unimpeded access to essential humanitarian aid.”Save the Children has been operating in Ethiopia for over 60 years. The organisation focuses on health, nutrition, water and sanitation, protection services, education and cash and in-kind distributions. In 2022, Save the Children reached about 7.6 million people including about 5.1 million children through life-saving food, water distribution, and treatment for malnutrition among other services.

The Ethiopian army was regaining ground on Wednesday against militias in the Amhara region, according to residents interviewed by AFP, after the local government on Tuesday evening spoke of a return to "relative peace". On Thursday 13 July 2023, CBI launched the ‘Transitioning the Ethiopian horticulture to a Sustainable Export Alternative’(To SEA) project in Ethiopia. The project aims to support the Ethiopian horticulture sector in growing fruits and vegetables (FVV) exports, and making the shift from air freight to sea freight. The project will support 13 Ethiopian FFV companies with technical support, business linkages and pilot export shipments. Mr. Tewodros Zewdie of the Ethiopian Horticulture Producers and Exporters Association (EHPEA), a key partner in this project, added that the shift sea-freight is a crucial priority for the growth and sustainability for Ethiopian horticulture exports. Fano rebels have been pushed out of Amhara’s second biggest city in significant breakthrough for Ethiopian federal forces. The military’s success in Gondar, Amahara’s second biggest city, is the first significant breakthrough for federal forces, who were overrun by Fano militiamen there and in some other towns when fighting broke out in early August. A Fano fighter from Gondar told Reuters news agency that the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF), backed by anti-riot police and pro-government militiamen, had pushed the Fano fighters out of the city on Tuesday.
