Now it’s time to explore in more detail how these common land uses in coffee production impact the natural environment. A global meta-analysis of biodiversity in coffee agroforestry found total species richness was 46% higher in agroforestry systems as compared to monocrop plantation systems. According to the latest edition of the Coffee Barometer, coffee is expected to cause the loss of 10-20 million hectares of forest by 2050, releasing 1.65-3.3 gigatons of carbon. The Moral of the StoryIf we return to the initial question of how coffee can both be regarded as an environmental hero and villain, it’s clear that the answers lie in these two different approaches to cultivation. “The kind of system that is intensive coffee plantations, or very large-scale coffee monocultures, I see that as the crisis,” Perfecto told Vox.

Tunisia and Libya on Thursday announced an agreement to share responsibility for hundreds of migrants stranded on the remote desert border between the two countries, where dozens have died in the past month. The government in Tunis has come under fire for its treatment of sub-Saharan migrants and is facing renewed scrutiny after deporting hundreds of people with no food or water to a desert buffer zone. Speaking at a meeting of the National Security Council in late February, he described the presence of sub-Saharan migrants as a "form of occupation" and part of a "criminal plan", sparking backlash at home and abroad. Only this week, at least 27 migrants were killed in two shipwrecks off Tunisia and the Western Sahara. Mr Saied's refusal to permit migrants to settle in Tunisia had thrown future IMF funding into jeopardy.

By Stuart Todd 10/08/2023Can a new Nigerian carrier, 49%-owned by Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s most successful, transform the hamstrung air cargo market in the continent’s most populous nation? Nigeria Air will launch in early October with two wide-bodied and six narrow-bodied aircraft, Ethiopian CFO Mesfin Tasew told Bloomberg TV. “Nigeria is a big country, big economy, but unfortunately, it doesn’t have a strong airline.”He said despite Ethiopian Airlines having just a 49% share, it would have a management contract. He added: “Effectively, Ethiopian Airlines will manage this airline to be successful.”He said Ethiopian had a proven management model, citing the setting up of Asky Airlines under a joint-venture in Togo, “which today is the most successful regional airline in Africa”. Local air cargo stakeholders highlight a current import-to-export airfreight ratio of 87:13, in favour of imports.

Saying goodbye seems to be a common occurrence over the past few months as many restaurants deal with rising labor, real estate and food costs, but I’m happy to say hello to Erta Ale, the Ethiopian restaurant that took Kyatchi’s place. The menu is pretty typical for an Ethiopian restaurant — you can order meats or vegetable entrees or platters that feed multiple people of either or both. My favorite at any Ethiopian restaurant is always the vegetables, and the vegetarian platter here did not disappoint. Let’s hope more people find Erta Ale so we don’t have to say goodbye to another downtown St. Paul restaurant. Erta AleWhere: 308 E. Prince St., St. Paul Contact: 651-728-8081; ertaaleethiopian.comPrices: Vegetarian platter, $17.99; meat entrees run from $15.99 to $18.99Good to know: On-street parking, but there are plenty of nearby meters; gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options

Nairobi (AFP) – Ethiopia's restive Amhara region was largely "calm" on Thursday, local residents said, after the federal government announced it had driven back militia fighters following days of fierce clashes. "Today it's extremely quiet in the city, no-one is moving," said one Bahir Dar resident who gave his name only as Tesfahun. Flights to the region were resuming on Thursday after Ethiopian Airlines announced it was ending a brief suspension of operations to Bahir Dar and Gondar. Tesfahun said funerals had been held in Bahir Dar churches on Wednesday evening for civilians killed in the crossfire. Access to Amhara is restricted for journalists and it is not possible to independently verify the situation on the ground.

The Ethiopian government did not disclose the number of casualties – from civilians, Fano rebels or the Ethiopian Defense Force. It was suspended last week following the clash between Fano and Ethiopian Defense Force. Demonstrations and public gatherings are outlawed across cities in the Amhara region and no timeline is indicated for it. Now the massacre is shifting to the Amhara region itself.
