WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Joe Biden will travel to Manville, New Jersey, and the Queens borough of New York City on Tuesday to assess damage from Hurricane Ida, the White House said. The trip comes days after the president visited storm-ravaged Louisiana, where the hurricane made landfall last Sunday killing at least 10 people and knocking out power for more than 1 million residents. Biden has pledged federal aid. The same storm continued northward through the eastern United States, dumping torrential rains and causing flooding in New York and New Jersey on Wednesday night, killing nearly 50 people. ZURICH (Reuters) – Events in Afghanistan could be a catalyst for the European Union to forge a common migration policy, European Commissioner Margaritis Schinas said in a newspaper interview. “It is true that we are now in a major crisis, but the EU did not cause the situation, yet we are once again called upon to be part of a solution,” the Greek commissioner, whose brief includes migration policy, told Austrian daily Wiener Zeitung. While not seeing a migration crisis, he said he wanted to “avoid a reflex that takes us back to the crisis year 2015 before it is even clear how the situation will develop”. The EU was better prepared this time, with stronger external border protection and financial resources to help Afghanistan’s neighbours, while EU states’ policies were increasingly converging, Schinas said. “Therefore, I see now as the moment to agree on a common European migration and asylum policy, as we proposed in the EU Commission in September,” he said.

(Reuters) – Taliban and opposition forces battled on Saturday to control the Panjshir Valley north of Kabul, the last Afghan province holding out against the militant group, as the top U.S. general warned of a “civil war” if the Islamists failed to consolidate power. Taliban spokesman Bilal Karimi said the districts of Khinj and Unabah had been taken, giving Taliban forces control of four of the province’s seven districts. “The Mujahideen (Taliban fighters) are advancing toward the centre (of the province),” he said on Twitter. Emergency, an Italian medical aid organisation, said Taliban forces had pushed further into the Panjshir Valley on Friday night, reaching the village of Anabah where the group has medical facilities. In Kabul, Taliban fighters broke up a demonstration by about a dozen women urging the group to respect women’s rights to education and jobs, according to private broadcaster Tolo news.

WARSAW (Reuters) – Poland will donate 400,000 doses of the AstraZeneca Plc COVID-19 vaccine to Taiwan, the foreign ministry in Warsaw said on Saturday, to help boost vaccination rates in the country. It has already received some six million vaccine doses gifted by Japan and the United States, enabling it to speed up an inoculation programme that it said had been hampered initially by China, though Beijing denies playing any negative role. Poland says its vaccine donation is a reciprocal move after Taiwan donated medical equipment during the first wave of the pandemic. “Keeping in mind this important gesture, Warsaw will offer Taipie 400,000 doses of the coronavirus vaccine to speed up the vaccination process. Slovakia, Czechia and Lithuania recently donated or said they would donate vaccines to Taiwan, which has repeatedly rejected offers of doses from China, saying it has doubts about the safety of Chinese made shots.

SUDBURY — All Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School staff must be vaccinated by Nov. 1, after a unanimous vote by the School Committee during a meeting Friday afternoon. In mid-August, the Somerville Education Association announced it had also voted to ratify health and safety protocols, which includes a vaccine mandate for educators. An employee's vaccination card could be requested at any time. "We're short of a mandate (requiring) vaccines; however, there seems to be interest across the board having staff vaccinated," said Tremblay. At that point, schools with 80% of staff and students vaccinated could lift the mask requirement.

NEW DELHI (Reuters) – Sachin Bansal, co-founder of e-commerce giant Flipkart, has mounted a court challenge against India’s financial crime-fighting agency, which has accused him and others of violation of foreign investment laws, court records showed. The judge in the case, R Mahadevan, heard the matter on Friday and asked the Enforcement Agency to file a response, reports said. Sachin Bansal, the Enforcement Directorate and Flipkart did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Flipkart has previously said it was “in compliance with Indian laws and regulations” and would cooperate with authorities. Sachin Bansal sold his stake to Walmart at that time, while the other co-founder, Binny Bansal, retained a small stake.

NATICK — Space at the Natick Mall formerly occupied by the Lord & Taylor department store has apparently been eyed to become a co-working office center that targets emerging companies. Earlier this year, Lord & Taylor's former parent firm, Hudson’s Bay Co., or HBC, branded "York Factory" for workplace development projects at most former Lord & Taylor store spaces, including in Natick. Representatives for CBRE, a commercial real estate services firm recruiting tenants for the Natick Mall, did not return requests for comment. James Freas, Natick's community & economic development director, said he didn't have any specific information about futures plans for the former Lord & Taylor space. The Lord & Taylor location at the Natick Mall closed in February.

SHANGHAI (Reuters) – Chinese Premier Li Keqiang urged major powers to “show responsibility” and play a leading role in improving global environmental governance and addressing such challenges as climate change. “The international community must use unprecedented determination and action to promote the construction of a beautiful world in which humanity is in harmony with nature,” he added. Beijing submitted a draft “Kunming Declaration https://www.reuters.com/world/china/china-submits-draft-biodiversity-declaration-united-nations-2021-08-27” to international partners last week, which included several slogans and concepts now being promoted by China’s ruling Communist Party. U.S. climate envoy John Kerry held two days of talks with his Chinese counterpart, Xie Zhenhua, in Tianjin this week, urging Chinese leaders to ensure that politics was kept out of climate change discussions. Senior Chinese diplomat Wang Yi told Kerry that climate “cannot be separated” from the wider diplomatic issues between the two countries.
