California lawmakers approve bill to collect LGBTQ data on victims of violent deaths
Last week, California lawmakers passed a bill that would launch a pilot program focused on tracking the gender identity and sexual orientation of victims of violent deaths. The bill, which was approved overwhelmingly by both chambers, now heads to the desk of Gov. “There is a lack of understanding about the relationship between risk of violent death, such as suicide or homicide, and an individual’s sexual orientation and gender identity,” the bill’s text reads. “This is because, unlike veteran status or ethnicity, the sexual orientation and gender identity of deceased individuals are only captured in special circumstances. “We must have better data to understand the scope of what’s happening in our LGBTQ community — especially among the youth — when it comes to violent deaths, including homicide and suicide.

PrEP, testing, and treatment as prevention leads to 80% drop in new HIV diagnoses
A study out of England has found that by combining multiple approaches to tackling HIV, new diagnoses of the virus plummeted. The study, conducted at sexual health clinic 56 Dean Street in London, was published in the journal HIV Medicine, ContagionLive reports. Specifically, Girometti highlighted PrEP to prevent new HIV infections, increased and readily available testing to detect new infections early, and the use of antiretroviral treatments to get those living with HIV to undetectable status. One study of serodiscordant gay couples found zero instances of transmission where the partner living with HIV was undetectable. Girometti said that, moving forward, researchers would be focusing on the impact on HIV infections following the “wider introduction of PrEP which started happening in 2018.” Researchers will also try to determine impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on HIV testing and diagnoses.

Aphibarnat leads at Wentworth, Rose, Lowry and Wiesberger boost Ryder Cup hopes
LONDON (Reuters) – Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat maintained his lead at the BMW PGA Championship with another impressive round at Wentworth as the battle for last-ditch automatic qualification for the European Ryder Cup team intensified on Friday. Austrian Bernd Wiesberger, who needs a top-50 finish at Wentworth to guarantee a Ryder Cup debut, did his chances no harm at all with a five-under 67 to move into the top 20. While Westwood should now make the team for the 11th time in his career, he said the Ryder Cup qualification process was flawed. Europe’s ‘Mr Ryder Cup’ Ian Poulter was also likely to miss the cut although he is almost certain to be one of Harrington’s picks, given his inspirational Ryder Cup form. Napoli in optimal condition against depleted Juventus

Texas GOP will once again try to ban transgender athletes from sports
For the fourth time this year, Texas lawmakers will attempt to pass a bill barring transgender athletes from competing on sports teams consistent with their gender identity. During the first special session, House Democrats, who had fled to Washington, D.C. in protest of more stringent voter restrictions, effectively denied the lower chamber a quorum, meaning no bills could be passed during the 30-day special session. This third special session, called by Gov. Greg Abbott (R), will focus on five items, including the transgender sports ban, reports Texas News Today. The relentless attacks on communities of color, historically accurate education, abortion rights, voting rights, and LGBTQ+ rights, infringe on the civil liberties of all Texans.

Black couple sues Taylor police after violent encounter over a ‘paperwork snafu’

The Taylor Police Department was sued – again – for allegedly using excessive force against a Black person. In this case, the driver was repeatedly tased and punched by cops in front of his daughter. Officers then pulled him from the car, and claiming he was resisting, Tased him repeatedly, including once while he was pinned face-down to the ground. “Yet the City of Taylor has a custom of acquiescing to this practice and failed adequately to train and supervise its officers on the constitutional use of force.”

Who You Think I Am review: Juliette Binoche shines in catfishing psychological thriller
On a crowded train platform in Paris, 50-ish college professor Claire (Juliette Binoche), still freshly divorced, awaits the arrival of her new lover. Expecting to finally lay eyes on his hot young blonde, Alex doesn’t see Claire at all. What Claire does or doesn’t do next helps shape a mystery that Who You Think I Am (★★★★☆) writer-director Safy Nebbou doesn’t firmly resolve. In the assured hands of Oscar-winner Binoche, Claire manages to be sympathetic if not faultless, despite being plainly delusional in her determination to sustain two identities, one of which is completely fabricated. Alex won’t be the only one she hopes to fool.

Opera Outdoors presents “the best of opera and musical theater” for free
This weekend, opera aficionados have two opportunities to appreciate the artform in casual settings in the great outdoors — both offered for free. DC Shorts Film Festival returns with another fantastic LGBTQ showcase
The festival, one of the largest of its kind in the United States, commences this weekend with a hybrid of live showcases and online streaming. One dead in Northborough house fire, lack of smoke alarms let fire spread
NORTHBOROUGH — A man was killed in an early morning fire Friday inside a Maple Street apartment where a fire official said a lack of smoke alarms allowed the blaze to spread unchecked throughout the building. The fire started in the victim’s apartment unit, the chief said. Firefighters found just one smoke alarm throughout the house, in the basement. Parente said the house should have had a hard-wired smoke alarm in every common area, including all hallways, as well as battery-operated smoke alarms in each apartment unit. “The lack of smoke detectors allowed the fire to get ahead of us,” said Parente.

Gay man who said mob carved "f****t" into him admits it was consensual
A 20-year-old Spanish gay man who told police that an anti-gay mob carved a homophobic slur into his buttocks has reportedly recanted his claims. He claimed that a mob of eight people wearing face coverings yelled homophobic slurs, before using a knife to cut his lip and carve “faggot” into his buttock.
